Help me, I hate Nursing!!!

If you are so miserable then maybe you should see your GP as you may well be suffering depression. If you have tried all types of nursing and you can't find anything you like it may well be that you only have barely enough energy to care for yourself. Travelling nursing is good in that you don't tend to get caught up in the politics of a place and crap like that, but every new job in a new context places you under an incredible amount of stress. Take into consideration as well, the fact that facilities employ casual/per diem or short term contract staff because they are chronically understaffed!

I'm sure the right job in nursing is there somewhere but maybe you have to get yourself sorted out first.

Try getting into clinic nursing, urgent care, or a specialty office practice. With 9 years of varied experience, you'd be an asset in an outpatient setting. It has its own set of problems, as does any job, but generally it is not nearly as stressful.

i agree, it's definitely time to change nsg. direction and get off the floor. with a bsn and your background, you have many options available. but first and foremost, take a much needed vacation so you can peruse your options.

It is very easy to get frustrated in our field but take a few minutes and remember why you became a nurse. For me, it was the opportunity to help others. There is a certain satisfaction in knowing that each day YOU have made a vital difference in somebody's life. Our patients depend on us but they also draw strength from us even if it is just from a friendly word or a smile when they are feeling afraid or alone. I know that this can be draining but it can also provide a satisfaction that no other job I have ever held can. Many of my patients have improved my life greatly by just having the opportunity of meeting them. Yes, I know that their are the other patients out there that can make you wonder why you continue to come in to work everyday but the other ones often make it worth your while. Keep your chin up and I wish you all the best.

after 27 years i finally made a huge change in my career path and wonder why i did not think of it sooner. at least you identified the need to go to a different setting. write a list of all of the different settings you would consider, then see if something suits you. teaching is less stressful and an option opened to bsn's. dont laugh but about 10 years ago my good friend who is also an rn and i both quit nursing for about a year and worked as telephone psychics and just loved it. in january of this year i decided the same thing that i had had enough. so i stay home and take care of my kids, once in a while i work with a pediatric neurologist (my sons md) just to keep up on my skills. i have learned to make the financial adjustments. my husband & i worked hard to plan for my early retirement like we paid off the home, cars and bills so that i would not have to work anymore. treat yourself to a massage:rolleyes:

i need help. i have been a nurse now for 9 years (i am 32) i have worked in every field and currently in adult icu. i started buring out about 4 years ago and became a traveler. i am at the point of total burnout now. i cry at least once a week. i cannot believe how understaffed hospitals are. i am afraid i am going to have a nervous breakdown.

i have a bsn if that helps any. my only experiece is in bed side nursing. i just need a different setting or some sort of hope.....

Great advice from everyone! We are in the same boat! I have been a nurse for 10 years, and I am 31. Up until 2 months ago, I was full-time at the bedside, stressed! I also have 2 new babies, one 21 months, and one 6 month old! Stress at home, stress at job, wife, mother of 3...etc. I just got my foot in doing case managment, and jumped at the opportunity two feet first. I love it. WOW! My stress is so much lower, I am even tempered, and so much happier! DO IT. Change that job, you can always go back. Bedside nursing will always have a need. Change is scary, because of the unknown, but it can be wonderful.:)

One nurse I met burned out. Took a month off. Decided to go back to school for a master. Now she is teaching the next generation of nurses and she is happy.

I agree with the posts. You need to put yourself first. burnout is serious. impossible to function when your in a burnout state.

You may need meds or you may need a little counselling, your life isn't long enough to suffer needlessly.

Stress/depression whatever you label it, is difficult to pull out of alone. Good for you to take a break and realign yourself.

I find I need a total job change at least every 10 years -- perhaps you do, too. One of the great things about nursing is that many different doors are open to you.

Exploring a new area is scary but it's also stimulating and a lot of fun.
