Hello everyone. I'm also a Filipina Nurse who was petitioned by an employer and was luckily granted an immigrant visa. Now I'm already here in California (Chula Vista) waiting for my interim permit. Anyone of you on the same boat before. How long will the California Board of Nursing issue an interim permit or ATT. My application was filed September 2005 and until now I have not receive yet my ATT. My employer told me that I can't work if I don't have my interim permit and I'm already more than a month now here in US jobless. I already have my green card with me, social security number and it's upsetting that I can't start working.I highly appreciate any responses to my post.thank you

Hi to everyone! I am a newbie here....just registered today. I am a RN from the Philippines....few days ago I called CA-BON and got a message that I am already eligible for NCLEX...I will register with Pearson VUE soon.

I am planning to take NCLEX this coming July or August....ca anyone here suggest a good review center in Manila or Makati? I am planning to attend GAPUZ or KAPLAN. Can anyone advice me which one is better?

Another thing, I have a valid US tourist visa - is it better to take NCLEX in the US or it is nothing different than Hongkong? I mean, I know the exam is the same but how about the ambiance, you know?

Gracias....

Go the smart route and take it in SE Asia first. What happens if you do not pass the first time? You will be having to fly back home.

Maybe its better to just wait for the exam results. Have a vacation.

Are you expecting to fail the exams? You won't be able to study properply for the exams if you go the interim permit route and if you went there via tourist I'm not sure you can extend your stay just because you have an interim permit. If that's what you are thinking. If you're there with a diff. visa it's still best to concentrate on studying for the re-exam.

If you expect to pass the exams then you don't need the interim permit.

The IP is only good before you take the exam. It becomes void afterwards.

And you cannot work with that, if you do not have a visa that permits it. If the nurse has not taken the CGFNS exam, and gone that route, then getting the IP means absolutely nothing. It is a useless waste of money.

A nursing license in the US does not give you permission to work.

ok thx... I have questions about the application process.... am I correct if I send my application for california comprising of...

a.) the application form ( 2 pages )

b.) the payment

c.) a copy of my diploma

d.) reason for not having a licence

e.) Hard Card

Now, is it ok if I send it via Fedex or does it have to be sent via regular mail only? is a local licence required? or a diploma is enough.... thank you...

Please take a look at all of the stickies at the top of this forum that I spent so long to write.

Do not use CA for initial licensure, unless you do not mind getting your N CLEX results as a Christmas present. That is when you will get them if you go that route.

You can actually review on your own. There are many nclex books w/c are better than the local review centers. Do you think the local review centers get their pool of Q's from previous exams from ncsbn or pearson-vue? They get it from diff. books. Where else right?

If you insist on review centers I don't think there is a program (whether local or kaplan) that finishes in just 2 mos.

Plus, local review centers have programmes and schedules that they follow. Check first if they will be actually having a programme soon.

In kaplan I think you can start anytime because it caters to the individual but

usually their programme takes longer than 2 mos. and they'll make sure you have good scores from their exams first.

Ambiance? - if you're talking about inside the test center. They have the same set-up and you're in individual cubicles so once you're inside, it's just you and the computer. Not much ambiance.

if i fail the first time in hongkong, i have to go back to hongkong, haven't i? this will cost me another let's say 500 us$.....

i was thinking that if i don't pass the first time, then i will stay for a while in california and take review classes, and then re-take again after 90 days.....hopefully, i will pass the second round.....

anyway, i have relatives in the us who can help me with my financial need when i'm there, that's why i am considering taking nclex in california.

what do you think, susanne?

That settles the IP route then. :lol2:

i have applied for my rn-nclex licensure exam and interim permit a month ago, i didnt know it takes that long to get the att and interim permit, i am already here in san francisco arrived last dec via fiance visa. While waiting for my interim permit, i have to find ways to earn money so i have applied for a caregiver job in one of the homecare companies here in sanfrancisco, its okay for now and besides the company which hired me promised to offer me a nursing position once i have my interim permit already. Im just concerned though because i have been out of practice for 16 yrs only got back when i took a 6 mo, refresher clinical training at phil general hospital in manila last year, i dont know if hospitals here would be willing to hire me even if i pass nclex knowing ive been away for 16 years. Im just wondering if they would ask me to take a refresher course or they would just give me enough orientation? my self-esteem is really low, even the caregiver job im still doubting myself if i could do it, my co-workers are homeheath or cna certified and i have a feeling they know more nursing skills than me, if there are nurses in same situation like me, pls i would like to hear from you too.

Welcome back to nursing:welcome: Most of the hospitals will offer solid orientation, we call it preceptorship, which could last 6 to 12 weeks, and of course if we feel that the new hires needs more ..then we extend their orientation. We sometimes call preceptorship as "BUDDY SYSTEM", and this is how it works, as a new nurse/new hire, you will have a mentor/preceptor, that will work the same shift with you, both of you will take care of the same patients. As your preceptor, she will try to teach you all the things you need to know about the hospital, its protocols, policies and procedure and others. She will always be there as your resource person, strong clinical support, YOUR BUDDY.

Now, for nurses who are trying to go back to bedside nursing, and havent been practicing for years, there are a lot of hospitals , big hospitals, that offer refresher courses. and I am pretty sure that you will find a good one in LAX area. Search the web.

You said that you took a refresher course in PGH, you are good then, I mean, it's still nursing, same principles, same procedures, same rationales. You just need to work on your self esteem. If I were you I will try to work as a CNA in a Med Surg Unit, that would be a good exposure. Also, read books, nursing magazines (helps a lot).

A lot of hospital will be willing to hire you after you pass the boards, they will even offer perks like sign on, relocation assistance and others. And once you're hired, do not expect to be an expert nurse in 6 weeks, ... patience, and of course practice.

Hi there Suzanne and everyone,

First I would like to ask Suzanne what her advise would be for me. She said to never go for CA for foreign nurses for the initial licensure which I did, and had already taken the NCLEX last May 4. I am still awaiting my results. My problems are the results cant be viewed online because I don't have a SSN and also I have a problem looking for a sponsor. Would it be better if I applied to another state like ARIZONA/COLORADO/VERMONT for my initial license? Can I still transfer my passing scores to those states? Can I do this in order to get a license? And where can I find sponsors?or employers to petition me? I want to have a immigrant visa to be able to bring my family with me here in the US. I would appreciate any comments or similar experiences. By the way I would like to share that I took the NCLEX here in the US but I am on my way back to the Phil because I just have a tourist visa. I can say it was more expensive than just taking the test in Hongkong. I can say that the review in the Philippines is good enough and can help. When I got here because the transportation and the review fee is way too much, it just became a problem, I just reviewed online, too bad. If you were in the Philippines there are lots of good cheaper reviews around. thats all. hope Suzanne or any other person could reply to my inquiries. I heard that the California BON would only wait for a year for your SSN if ever you pass the NCLEX before they issue you your license. Can this be extended if I cant provide a SSN? Like if you cant find a sponsor? What would I do next if I pass the NCLEX and I have no license?

If you already have taken the NCLEX exam, you are going to need to just wait for you results.

CA gives you three years to give them a SSN# to issue you a license.

You need to decide where you wish to work. Then proceed accordingly. Not the other way around.

hi, when did you receive your greencard, because I arrived here in california feb 9, until now I havent received my greencard yet, thanks.

hi, suzanne i just wanna ask i'm a fresh grad from the phils just got here in California 3 months ago.I wasn't able to take the local board there bec my immigrant visa was about to expire. Now, is it a must that you are a local board passer for you to be eligible to apply for the NCLEX in California?

you do not need to be a local board passer, but it will take four to six months for you to get approval to sit for the exam.

ca requires that you submit a letter why you did not take the exam, that is it.
