help! failed nclex 6 times...

Published

I graduated last year from an accelerated program as an honors student and have failed my sixth attempt this past week. I have utilized everything under the sun....Kaplan, Saunders, Lippincott, LaCharity, along with a tutor. I'm thinking about going forward with Hurst this next time around. I haven't given up and I do not plan to give up. But I am losing a lot of faith in myself and do not know where else to begin to study for the next exam.

The 5th exam shut off at 265 and this last exam shut off at 75. I'm at a complete loss because I thought I nailed the 75 one since I receive a lot of prioritization questions and the last question was prioritization AND it was based off of abnormal lab values. I was 100% sure I got that question right but lo and behold, I saw the big fat F when I paid for my unofficial results on Pearson Vue.

Any advice or direction or books/resources would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Thank you in advance!

Hi I will have to take on my 5th attempt but before FL allows me for that I have to do remedial course, What other state will allow me to take NCLEX without doing remedial? TIA!

Why not apply to the state where you wish to live and work? NY allows unlimited attempts as does CA but the evaluation process for an IEN on NY takes 6-9 months. If you failed 4 times clearly you are in need of remediation. IENs are not taught the same way as U.S. nurses hence the

Is it transferable? If ever I decided not to live in NY? I will be moving to NV soon..Since I already failed 4x I wanted to do remedial as I wanted to become an RN, Though NV requires TOEFL ..Thats why want to try different state and just transfer if I pass..

Thank You for the Advice..

JCAR, you have had many good, informative responses to your questions on another thread, but you seem to not be listening to any of it.

You are focusing on the WRONG THINGS right now. You shouldn't be looking into "transferring" (you don't transfer, you endorse) a license because you have been unable to GET a license because you cannot pass the NCLEX.

You asked for advice (again), so....again...you DO need to do remediation, you DO need to take coursework that will prepare you to pass the NCLEX, period. You are focusing on this State, that State, and missing the understanding that regardless of whether you are allowed to test again here or there....you aren't passing.

In a nutshell, if/when you become licensed by any State, *most* of the time another State will accept your application to receive a license in their State. But first you must be licensed SOMEWHERE.

IF you consider how long it will take you (as a foreign applicant) to become eligible to take the NCLEX as a New York State applicant, you would have already been able to complete a review/refresher/remediation course and strengthened your chances of passing.

Why are you not wanting to do this?

You likely have to pass TOEFL to endorse to NV. Why not do it now rather than waste another$1000 and months of time? NY takes 6-9 months to review your credentials. It's several hundred dollars for the CVS. The you have to courses to take before you can be licensed that only apply to NY, more expense. The licensing fee is at least $200 plus fingerprints and a background check more $$$. Your chances of passing without remediation. So how many more attempts at $200 each? 2, 3, 5? Before you take the needed remediation. So now it's 12-18 months later you want to move to NV. You may have finally passed the NCLEX. You try to endorse to NV and find you still must have your credentials evaluated (Only NY uses CVS so a few hundred dollars paid to CGFNS for a CES) only to find you are still ineligible until you pass the TOEFL proving competency in the English language.

Instead of applying directly to NV at a cost of say $750 between licensing, CES, NCLEX, CEUs and NCLEX prep and getting licensed in less than a year in your chosen state....you have chosen to pay probably $3,000+ to avoid the TOEFL and a nursing remediation/NCLEX prep course? You can't work as a nurse until licensed so now you are going to delay working by 2-3 years and reduce your chances for employment all to avoid remediation and a mandatory test of English competency.

I suppose if you can afford the excess expenses and can risk not ever working as a nurse then your method is fine. Good luck.

Thank You for all the Information, You were right. I should do remediation

instead of applying to different state that will cost and take me forever to wait...I'am really lost and trying to put myself together and being positive to this...Dont get frustrated on me..I'm Thankful you guys are spending time to give me advices...

I understand your pain, but I m starting to believe that the test is design to make money,, 1why come you can't see your results not questions but the actually so called graph..and it really don't seem fair to have everyone taking different number of tests ..and you can take a whole test and if it's over the line you pass.. No matter if you get it right are wrong..but it really seem someone is making a lot of money..

Wow! This is funny.

Instead of saying this to the OP, we should probably focus on the problem that she failed the test 6 times while many passed the test on their first try.

I just want to tell the OP that passing the NCLEX is one thing... And I really hope you pass the next time you take it.

However, failing it 6 times is another issue. I would recommend a refresher course as other posters have suggested. I also got worried when I read that you are an honor student from an accelerated school. This just clearly tells me that some schools are not teaching the basic safety knowledge and nursing skills required from nurses as new grads.

NCLEX questions are designed for new grads. The nursing knowledge should have been derived from your attandance/training provided by your nursing school. Review courses are out there solely to supplement the current knowledge that you already have. I used the live review by Kaplan in 2007. I did not use anything else. Although this is years ago, the type of questions and exam style is still the same today.

Anyway, I wish you all the best!

Thank you for the encouragement. I have enrolled in a refresher course and have been diligent with practicing more questions. I am looking forward to passing this next time around. PRAY FOR ME!

Girl, I'm sorry you failed again. I think the issue with you is content. Are you understanding what you are studying instead of doing questions blindly? You need a good content review like Hurst Review to get the basics and create a foundation to hit the nclex questions.

I feel the problem is both content, point of view and the language barrier. You weren't taught in the same way, the same knowledge base, nor the same perspective as U.S. nurses were/are.

Remediation and answering many questions might be the best course of action.

While I study, I do review the content simultaneously; given that this is another go-around I will plan on doing that again. Thank you for the tip.
