HELP DON offer in Longterm Care

Published

Hi! I was just offered a position as a DON. The pay will be great. This facility is small. Currently 29 residents. I currently work on a med surge floor. I have nursing home experience. My hard decision is due to the amount of time required. There is one ADON. The DON and ADON rotate on call. Would love to hear from other DON's in small faciilities

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, hospice.

I would look in the specialties forum. There is a section for LTC directors and assistants. The post may be old but there may be some good info for you.

Do you have any management experience?

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

The amount of call time would also give me pause. Likely, that is why the pay is so good.

Do you have any administrative experience with LTC's? Regulatory requirements, etc.?

I don't have management experience. I have worked many times as RN supervisor.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Your post has been moved to the LTC Nursing forum.

I have a friend who currently works as a DON at a LTC facility. In spite of the awesome salary, she's currently looking for other jobs away from management and is willing to take a pay cut. The DON position is not for everyone.

I worked as a DON for a little more than a year and I agree with the previous post 100% because management is not for everyone. I hated many aspects of the job but did love a few aspects. I did not have the advantage of working in a small facility. I got out the first chance I got to make an excuse to. I will not willingly enter into a management role again in any LTC.

Don't you wonder why they'd offer the DON job to someone with no LTC experience?

Did you take the job?
