Hi!
I'm currently applying to nursing schools in CA. Looking at applicant pool statistics, I'm feeling pretty discouraged.
Science Prereq Grades: B,B+,B-,A
Core Prereq Grades: All A's
Other GE Grades: All A's
TEAS: 86.0
Overall GPA: 3.65
CNA certified
I feel that my science prereq GPA is really bringing down my chances, however, my school won't allow me to retake the ones with B's because I "passed". Is there any chance I can get into a nursing school? I really don't want to have to apply to a private school.

I think you'll be just fine.

Your best source of information will be a representative of each program you're interested in applying to. They all calculate things differently. Your science GPA would have kept you out of my ASN program, but that doesn't mean anything because you're not applying to my school.

My friend, a former CNA, had similar grades and a high GPA. She couldn't get into nursing schools in California because it was a lottery system. She ran into a ton of brick walls, but is a happy successful BSN RN today.
As another All nurses poster says, brick walls are put there to show you how badly you want something.

Just curious, what is the scient GPA requirement for your program?
The requirement was not very high, although I cannot remember the exact number. It was competitive entry, though. My school didn't count anything except science GPA (and completion of non-nursng classes). I had a 3.7 and was only admitted as an alternate, so I can assume that the first choices were higher than me.

I honestly don't think you'll have a problem getting in. Some schools use the point system and so you're not judged on just your GPA. Apply to multiple schools and look at what they require so you see how likely you're to get in. You'll be fine with what you have.

I would retake them at an alternate location. first ask the school of choice's advisors what they would do if you applied having taken the class and done better in the later try. best of luck!

Thank you all for the responses! I'm going to see how admissions go for the spring cycle (since I was only able to apply to one school this semester). If I don't get into any, I suppose I'll just retake those 3 science courses!
