HELP! Bombed the HESI Entrance Test

Nursing Students HESI

Published

I took the HESI pre-entrance test today and BOMBED scoring 72.5%. I need a minimum of 77% to even be considered for the program.

I got the Elsevier review book and studied for 10 days. I took the 4 practice tests in the back of the book but I dont think it helped enough. There were questions on the practice tests that were not covered in the review chapters.

I got a 68% on the Math (improper fractions killed me) and had trouble with the Bio section. I did OK on the AP part but there were questions I didnt know even though I studied the review book. I completed AP I this

Fall (got a B+) and I am registered for AP II starting in two weeks. I passed Algebra I and II with a B+.

I am frustrated. I am a 3.6 GPA in the pre-nursing classes, I work a full-time job and a part-time job as a Nurse Assistant in the ER (16 hours a week) to make me more competitive when I apply. I go to school two nights as week to complete the pre-reqs. I am a returning student after 20 years and I truly want to be a nurse. The clinical experience in the ER I love and I have learned a great deal in a short period of time

Does anyone have any advice on how to better prepare for the re-take test? I have two weeks to get ready and this re-take is my last shot for me to apply for the Fall 2009 class. You can only take the test twice in one

application year.

Thanks for your help and guidance

 :banghead:

Thank you!! I am actually going to be taking the vocab. grammer, reading, math BIO, and laslty CHEM that is driving me insane. Of course the personality test and the other one. IT is a relive that I can use a calculator though....Thank u again!

I took my test yesterday but made 80-89%. I think the test is basically comprehensive. Just take your time to pick the best answer. The comprehension is very trickish, but take your time to pick the best answer after 2 distractor.:typing.

I too bombed my HESI A2, I did average on the math grammar etc but the sciences killed it for me. I bought the study guide and felt that it was only helpful in the math and grammar sections.

The review of the sciences was pointless I studied the guide front to back ant it was such a waste of time and money. I do not have a backround in A&P but I do in Bio and I still scored poorly.

I am a BCC student and took the HESI a2 but for the nursing program... the sciences were very very diffcult. YES you do need to memorize the metric system, there are alot of questions on them. The study guide they suggest is only helpful in math and grammar, not the sciences at all. If you want to study for them use old notes from classes you have taken in the past. GOOD LUCK

Does anyone know of any good online websites that break down metric conversions?? Sites that possibly show you how to convert without using their conversion calculator? :)

Tks

WAHOOOO!!!! :yeah: I passed the re-take on the HESI2. I had to do the biology section as I'd passed everything else. I only got an 80 but that is okay - still counts :)

For those that don't know how the science sections are: you need to know the material "cold". What I've found out after taking it twice now is that there are going to be questions you didn't cover at all in your studies. So, you've really got to go into it knowing your stuff cause you're likely to miss a couple of oddball questions anyway.

Good luck friends! Now I've got to go do some housework

Hello Everybody, I would like some advice I am taking the HESI Entrance Exam on June 18 2009. I have just started studying. I printed out the westcoast university guide is this guide similiar to the exam??? My next question is what should I study for Biology and A&P. I would appreciate it if I can get some feedback on what to study in these two sections since the HESI book is too basic. PLEASE HELP!!!

Thank you

Yes, I too am seeking out the best ways to study the bio, chem and A&P parts of the test. I have the study guide as well as the mo-media study guide "secrets".

can anyone share the main topic areas for the sciences?

thanks!

oh, and one last question.. is the HESI Entrance score a combined score or each section on its own?

For example, if I get HIGH scores on math, grammar, vocab.. would that offset a lower score say in chem?

i am a bcc student and took the hesi a2 but for the nursing program... the sciences were very very diffcult. yes you do need to memorize the metric system, there are alot of questions on them. the study guide they suggest is only helpful in math and grammar, not the sciences at all. if you want to study for them use old notes from classes you have taken in the past. good luck

when you say bcc do you mean broward community college? what hesi test...

Is the Kaplan study book better than the HESI study guide?

Are all HESI tests the same for Nursing programs through out the US?

Help"bombed

I am about to take my exam.I went to take it last week but system went down.I was told a few important bits of advise.First..saunders most current comprehensive review of practical nursing will give you the best head start you can get..its thousands of questions..and all application, cover the hard stuff ..but you still have to know your chemistry applications..micro. basic science and algebra.Taking times 60 point algebra quizes over and over helps.Even though I havent taken it yet.The person I talked to coordinates my program..and knew whzt she was talking about. Its unfortunatly not a 2-4 week study exam. Not unless you have a photo graphic memory, or have a young mind and have just taken and comprehended all you a&p micro, chem nursing process, labs, med math etc etc.

This is NOT to overwhel but to prepare. If you choose to buy or even check out from library the saunders ...you will NOT regret it.But supplement with a comprehensive review of your important prenursing classes.

Hope this helps.

Make sure you take a breath and take your time when answering the questions. There isn't a time limit on the test. Just relax and make sure you read all the way through the question before you answer it and move onto the next question. Memorize the fractions. I hate fractions and that's what I did to pass with an overall score of 90 on all sections. Good luck on your next attempt![/quo

I'll be taking it soon and didn't realize that there is not time limit. That is good news!
