Alright, i was in baltimore and it's not like philly so i can't tell which place is a good area. I've heard of several areas: charles village, federal Hill, midtown, Mt Vernon, canton, Parkville, i'm also looking at a property at ednor gardens.
It's very confusing. Yes i live in philly which is high crime but i live dowtown which is very safe so i'm a little oblivious to the crime in this city since they do a good job keeping it out of center city. Anyway, i've heard horror stories about baltimore. People tell me that it's worse than the worse parts of philly.
I'm trying to decide on where to live. I'm a city girl, but i can live i the burbs as well. No, i do not like sketchy areas. You're likely to find me walking outside at 1am in philly and so i need somewhere safe. Oh, i don't think i'll be walking around at 1am in baltimore but i still need a safe neighborhood.
Anyway, which area would you guys suggest is good for me to live? which places are safe? i don't want a place where everyone in the neighborhood has been mugged or had their house broken into. If you need my stats to fit me somwhere, I'm a new grad, single, female, no kids, not pets. I don't want an isolated area; i like a place with movie theaters and stuff to do. i really need to make a decision fast. I saw one place in Ednor gardens i think i like, does anyone have info on the area?
For those of you who live in baltimore or the surrounding burbs, or if you've ever lived there, please share your opinions, good or bad, i'd love to hear them.
thx
I have the perfect area for you - Owings Mills.
Owings Mills is just a Metro ride to Hopkins or anywhere downtown.
Hopkins Hospital has it's own stop in the metro line and instead of dealing with the 83 traffic (which is not bad right now, but murder when school is in session) you can commute in a/c and read a book, listen to music, whatever and be delivered safely to Hopkins' front door.
Owings Mills has a lot of nice condos and apartment communities filled with young professionals like yourself and shopping/dining is within easy walking or driving distance.
I just moved to Baltimore less than a week ago. I have been spending all my time in different neighborhoods trying to decide where to permanently live.
Areas I like so far are Ridgely's Delight, Inner Harbor/Downtown and maybe Mt. Vernon. Still have so much more to discover. I still haven't found a supermarket - but was told Safeway delivers.
Where will you be working ?

check the crime stats with the police department for Ridgely's Delight. They have had their fair share of robberies, burglaries, etc in this small area. There was an article in the Baltimore Sun a while ago focusing on medical students that live in this area that have been victimized.
Check out Mount Washington, nice quiet area with convenience to the city.

There is the Safeway in Pigtown on Lombard St. maybe? Also Fells Point has a Whole foods just across President Street and the Safeway in Canton is really nice. Good luck. Balto. has a lot of great neighborhoods to pick from, imo.
i'm starting to think owings mills might be a good idea. I think the patterson park area around highlandtown is quiet and safe, just couldn't find a house in my price range. the lexington market area? eutaw and lexington...i think that's a little sketcy in terms of the shady characters there. fed hill is ok. Pigtown has it's nice parts but the burglaries i've heard of scare me. After exploring the city, maybe moving out of the city might be good.
i'm still deciding.
thanks to all of you.

Took me over a week of hitting the streets.....I found a SuperFresh market in Mt Vernon today! I am now leaning towards that neighborhood even though the Inner Harbor is closer to work. Give me hummus and I am so happy!
Even though it was a small store it has a great selection.

I love Mt. Vernon. I probably wouldn't be running around at night alone but for the most part the people are super interesting. The restaurants, pubs etc. can't be beat and the old houses are beautiful. I never was a suburb type person. :)

Hey,
Are you talking about the superfresh around saratoga and charles? I tend to go there whenever i go to Mercy. i'm more of a trader joes person but i looked at an apartment on 222 saratoga. It's a really nice apartment complex. Nice big rooms with 2 bathrooms, lots of closet space, W/D, maid service, gym, business center, really cheap parking and the loftstyle i was looking at was $640 for my half so i think that's decent. Plus, it's less than a block from mercy. I got lost trying to find the place and one guy walking his dog told me he looked at the apartment but gave it up cuz they wouldn't take his dog. lemme tell ya, that dog he was walking was big but since all the pets i know are back in the midwest, it works for me.
I've been working serious overtime this past week and i'll stop working for my employer here in philly this weekend so that should give me some time to look at apts in b'more.
Baltimore has always felt foreign to me but i found something that made me feel right at home. They have caribou coffee! We have that in Minnesota and i used to get their stuff almost every morning on the way to school back in my high school days. Seing that seemed to have made me a little comfortable. kinda wierd, ain't it?
Let me know where you settle.
All the best.
I grew up in Owings Mills and lived there for a while with my husband. If you have any questions I'm happy to help!Check out New Town, they have a bunch of apt complexes all along Lakeside Blvd.
ya know, i've been doing serious overtime. I'm talking having only two days off between last friday and this saturdays. 7 out of 9 straight days.
I'm gonna drive over and find a place God willing, next week.

I've been doing a lot of research and i have to ask this questions? which apartments/apt complexes in owings mills don't have loud neighbors and people vandalizing cars? i just took the comp. off my auto insurance so the only thing i have is collision and the basic stuff. That means if my car is vandalized, i'll have to pay for it myself and i don't think i want that.
I haven't heard the best things about morningside and the other apt complexes. i'm starting to look at federal hill. I have a feeling my auto insurance is gonna increase next year when i change my address to something in maryland. For some reason, auto insurance in baltimore is higher than that in philadelphia city(And they say philly is bad). That tells me all the car theft stories i've heard about aren't just stories.
Seriously, i have two weeks to go and i haven't found a place yet.
At the current moment, the probability i'll be driving from philly to bmore for my orientation is about 90%. That's bad!

The area around Hopkins is awesome! Such a great place to be and so close to everything! Just heed warning, as in any city, the area has a bit of a rough past. (notice the blue police lights and cameras stationed all around- they are making a change!)
I hope that works out though!
