I'm all set to start my new job in Hospice on Jan 7, and this past Friday, my boss calls me into his office. I was told I have to pay back the money that the hospital paid for my nursing assistant class and I have to pay back the whole amount. They will not prorate my time, or let me make payments. My other choice is I have to stay full time until May to work out my year. Needless to say, I'm hurt, shocked, and downright ticked off that they would wait until I'm practically out the door to hit me with this information.
As one who doesn't have a spare few thousand in my checking account, I feel like I'm being held hostage.
I talked to Hospice HR and explained the situation, and bless them, they're willing to put me on as Casual until I May.
I'm just so frustrated I want to scream.
Why in the world was a nursing assistant class a few thousand dollars????
The reason the cost seems high is, they paid the nurse to teach the class, more than likely paid the aids being taught and paid the cost of testing. All total this can reach over a thousand dollars or more. My guess, that is why. The cost of testing depends on the company setting up the test, it can cost as much as $75 or more just to take the test, that is what I paid for my daughter. Also, the cost of her two week classes was $450 and did not include the book. They did furnish the book for classroom only. So add in all the wages, and it's at leat $1000.
We got to keep the book. I'm sure it was close to $100 for that. Then they had to pay all of the people who came to speak--- infection control nurse, critical care nurse, berevement nurse, nurses to watch us during the test and final exam, etc. They're the most expensive hospital in this area, and they also own practically EVERYTHING. I've resigned myself that I have to work out the year, but it's getting harder and harder. I do know one thing. I do not want to work there as an LPN once I graduate from school and pass boards.

Kylee, I know your frustration. I believe anyone here on this board has at some point in their careers, experienced that same frustration. I sure have. During a very trying time in my career when I was dealing with this frustration, a friend of mine said something that helped. She told me "when we don't get what we want, we gain experience" She was so right and I remember that whenever I am in a situation that is hard to handle. It certainly does help, so maybe, if you wake up everyday and think about those words, it will help you get through this time. Hang in there, better things do await you in the future! And remember, the people you are caring for during this time, need you. Good Luck:redpinkhe

Wow, sounds like a Ceu or mandatory class meeting.
Best of luck.
