Heartbroken

Published

Hi!

I am new to the allnurses forums. I just recently moved to Texas from Florida. My husband is in the Air Force and we got surprise orders here in May of '08.

I hope that you all can just lend an ear tonight. I am feeling very frustrated and I guess I need to vent to fellow nursing students and Nurses who understand what I'm going through.

I decided after years of being married and having children to finally go back to school to get my nursing degree. It has been my dream for forever! I succeeded against great odds to get admitted in to an ADN program in Florida. I pretty much sailed through the prereq's and made the Dean's list the first semester. I received an A in both A & P I and A & P II. I loved it! Fast forward to mid-January, my husband calls to say we've recieved orders to San Antonio, TX. I was totally devestated. I was due to graduate in October of '09.

Everyone assured me, including the Dean of the Univesity I was attending, that I would have "no problem" getting in to another school. Well, I had a bad feeling in my gut. I arrived here and found out that I needed some more prereq's (different ones than were required in Florida). I registered, with a heavy heart, for these new classes that I needed before I would even be considered for a spot in the nursing program. By the way, I am attending San Antonio College.

I am finishing my semester this week, with a current average in Chemistry of 88 and an A in Ethics. I need Micro, English Comp II and Lifespan, which I am enrolled in to take in the spring. I applied once to SAC and was turned down because I had not finished all of their prereq's.

What I'm really upset about tonight is that, I have been asking questions to Baptist Health Systems. The person told me today that she is not sure that I would be accepted, with a 74 score on the NET (which by the way I took after 10 years out of school), that they generally let in people with a score of 75! What gives!!! One point?!?!

I am beyond frustrated and heartbroken. I know that nursing is competetive now, but I'm having a hard time being one who was accepted and then being one who is being denied. I do feel that I would be such a good Nurse and I'm heartbroken that I am having such a hard time.

Again, I'm so sorry for such a long email. I am just crying tonight and needed to vent to people who know what it is to feel the passion for Nursing that I do!

Thanks:)

Hang in there, you will be able to complete a program somewhere, sometime. Just keep jumping through the prereq hoops.

You'll make it. Nursing needs dedicated people like you.

Thank you for all the support! I am gonna' just keep on trucking:) I know that it will happen, it's just a matter of time.

I did look in to Galen, but I think it would have to be my last resort due to the expense of it:eek: ACC seemed really far to me. It would be a total of 3 hours commute for me every day. I'm not willing to go that far.

If I don't get in to SAC or Baptist by the fall (because after that I won't have enough time left here to finish) I have decided that I will just start taking the remaining prereq's for my BSN. I only need 5 more classes, in addition to the nursing classes, for my BSN from the University of Maryland. (that's our next duty station) Maybe it will be better if I go in to that in the long run anyway.

Thanks again for all the responses!

When we moved from Las Vegas to Indy (I was an LPN at the time), I knew immediately I wanted to go thru a bridge program. I did go to a private college, no waiting list, got right in and they accepted all my credits. I completed the bridge program in three semesters and voila, we then got orders again! However, I graduated and that is all that matters.

I would avoid Excelsior for your initial RN as many states (including IL where I live now) do not accept it unless you have 2 years documented RN experience before you move here. With the constant moving, always, always go to a nationally accredited college.

Beedar, contact U MD and find out if they will accept distance courses or classes from the local CC for the ones you still need.

And good luck. You'll get there. And the BSN route is the best if you can afford it.

:)

Could you go back to the school you just left? Lots of mil spouses live apart and I guess are 'used' to it with deployments and such. Next Oct really isn't that long of time until you graduate! I lucked out I guess, I graduated from nursing and then my mil spouse and I moved cross country.. but had orders come sooner, I would have stayed and finished.

That's what I was thinking.

My wife was in another country finishing her BSN for almost 2 years. Yes it was tough, but it was better than her changing schools and getting set back.

I will have to tell you to look into excelsior college it is distance education and very military friendly. discount enrollment an free exams for military families and ect. I am in the navy and just completed this program. It is not easy but it is doable. You may have to get evaluated to see if they will except you without a lpn but you can do this and move around with your husband and still pursue your dreams..

i just wanted to let you know that you are definitely not alone.

i was taking pre-reqs for ns in michigan. i actually completed them all and was accepted to a school there. :D unfortunately, i was unable to start that program, because i worked full time and they program was full time. :bluecry1: i couldnt get my schedules to work together, and feeding my daughter won out.

then i began trying to get into another local school. well guess what? they wanted me to have a different set of pre-reqs.:uhoh21: after working to meet all of their pre-reqs, and getting ready to apply to the seconds schools program, i found out i was pregnant.:redbeathe definitely not in the plans. well, maybe i could've done both, but then i find out that we're gonna have to move to texas if we want to have a job.:(

so here i am, september of 07, moving to arlington, with a one moth old. once i'm here, i find that my chemistry class wont transfer to tcc because it was only 3 credits, theirs is 4. so in january, i force myself to sign up for a class i've already taken (took it in a 6 week summer semester and got an a the first time).

i finish chemistry with an a again, and finally, i am able to apply to a nursing program again. i found out in november that i was accepted, and will be starting in january 09.:yeah::D:d

sorry my story was so long, but i wanted you to know that you're not alone in your struggle. for most of us, it hasnt been an easy road. please dont give up. you will definitely appreciate it more when you finish. it will be worth that much more. good luck!!!

wow, bless your heart! i'm so happy for you that you finally got in.:yeah: you are the first that i've met that has been through a similiar situation as me. it has been so frustrating, but i think i'm coming out of the fog a little bit. i'm will be done with both schools (that i'm applying to) prereq's in may, so i just have to wait and see now. surely, i will get in to one of those.

a huge "thank you" to everyone who replied to me. you guys have no idea how much it means to me to share this with people who care about nursing as much as i do!!!:rcgtku:

i just wanted to share my story with you. sometimes it seems like we are struggling through this journey on our own. i just wanted to let you know that i feel your pain. there have been so many times that i wondered if this was the right path for me, it seemed like everything that could stand in my way did. good luck to you, i'll say a prayer that you get in to one of the programs that you applied for. keep in mind, my favorite phrase, "something's gonna work out."

Just happened upon this old post tonight and it has left me with tears in my eyes! I graduated from Baptist School of Health Professions and took and passed my NCLEX in June! Perseverance definately pays off! We moved AGAIN shortly after and I'm now living in Maryland. I'm looking for my first RN job and am so thankful :)

Yes! Congratulations!

Oh my goodness, I just got the alert for new messages posted here, I'd forgotten all about this post. I went back an re-read it though. LOL. First off, CONGRATS!!!!! I'm so glad that you've finally met your goal of becoming an RN. Second, my update is that I made it to the last semester of nursing school, found out I was pregnant again! I managed to finish the semester with the only C I'd gotten in nursing school. I graduated in December, passed my boards in February. I had my last child in April, got to stay home with her for 3 months, now I've just accepted a job working at a surgery center :)

Hope things continue going great for you!
