Greetings. Deb is going to put a sticky on this thread and eventually delete the other.
This is the thread where members come to share their journey to wellness and wholeness.
It's a holistic thread, talking about all apects of health, not just diet and exercise, but the mind and spirit as well. All posters are welcome (not just Premium Members) and encouraged on a periodic basis to share what you're doing, what you need to do and how you're going to do it, and what you know!
Blue - I love your hair!!! :) Congrats on the weight loss. I am like you, have to keep working at the diet because temptations are everywhere. I have a lunch meeting today with the Baby Bear Hugs Advisory Committee that I am on and I have already committed to myself that I am going to eat a salad so I don't throw myself off the wagon. A bunch of students ordered pizza last night (a weakness of mine too) between the test and lecture and I was so happy I was able to avoid it - WooHoo!!!
Hiker - thanks for the encouragement, I think I did ok. Want to see my grade though before I get too comfy in that thought.
Hi Zoe, Tweety & Muffie!
Have a great day y'all!

Hi Zoe, Tweety & Muffie!
Have a great day y'all!
You're doing SO GREAT Sarah, I'm so proud of you!
My progress is that I haven't regained the 5 lb I lost in Dec ... That IS quite a feat! But I would like to be better!
Avoid Winter Weight Gain
Winter is your enemy. Freezing temperatures force you inside, where you shovel heaps of high-fat comfort foods down your gullet. Before you know it, you've gained 10 pounds and your New Year's resolution has you shackled to a treadmill. Winter weight gain isn't just an urban myth; it's driven by biology and fueled by mood. In fact, most of us gain between three and four pounds during the winter months, despite our best efforts. But fret not: You can combat winter weight gain and remain slim and trim for spring.
causes
There are lots of culprits, but cold is the No.1 suspect. When temperatures drop, we stay inside. Our metabolisms slow to a crawl and we pack on the pounds. But the conspiracy runs deeper than that. During the winter, we forgo low-calorie snacks for prepackaged, high-fat delights like chips, nuts and crackers. We also get less sunlight, which makes us feel down in the dumps. To combat those feelings, we gobble up carbohydrates, fats and sugars, which make us feel better.
Some doctors believe that we're genetically programmed to gain weight when it gets chilly. "Your body may be working against you to hang on to it so you stay warm," said Lawrence Cheskin, MD, founder of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center in Baltimore, in an interview with Prevention magazine.
Fat is a great insulator and it really does a great job of keeping you warm. Before the days of forced air heating and good insulation, a few extra pounds could mean the difference between life and death. For most of us, however, freezing to death isn't really a problem. We want to look and feel good.
how to fight it (there is a paragraph under each strategy at http://channels.isp.netscape.com/men/article.jsp?article=20061207_health_and_sports_1.xml&floc=NI-ntk4 but these are the headings)
Stay active (no duhhh! - kb)
Get some sun
Take up a new sport
Eat well
Lay off the booze
Don't go overboard (with losing wt)
Woo hoo, blue! I'm sure you look lovely, m'dear :).
I'm working nights this weekend, so I'm going to go ahead and post my goals for the coming week and recap this weeks.
Fruits and veggies/I did OK. Not perfect, but an improvement.
I worked out three times.
I did end up driving every day, unfortunately. BUT, it was all unavoidable school stuff. Other than that I walked. Fortunately, I live within a few miles of just about everywhere I need to go (except for school--and have I mentioned that will be over in May, LOL).
This week I will:
1. Work out three times
2. Catch up hydration wise
3. Be mindful of portion sizes (bad nursing goal because it's a bit hard to measure, but I can live with that, LOL)
and, since this is a holistic thread. . .
4. Get rid of six monkeys off my back: schedule my tests, return my library books, get and wrap my daughter's birthday gifts, schedule a dentist appointment (for a crown, ugh), get my cd's in order (right now Springsteen is living in Knopfler's case and Toby Keith is where Howard Jones ought to be, you know. . .), and catch up on my technical stuff (burn cd's class lecture, etc.)
Taking care of the stuff I've been putting off is sure to relieve some stress, no? And I'm going to call my mom who thinks I've dropped off the planet this semester :)
So true Zoe! Winter has always been my enemy - could be why I despise it so much. I don't like cold and I don't like snow and I always seem to get depressed in the winter which = weight gain for me. I need to remember those tips and keep moving and stay positive. (And I'll hope that the Farmer's Almanac is wrong about this next upcoming storm or we're likely to be in a catastrophic state when it's done with - yikes!)
Hi all!
Blue, I just now noticed your avi, You're gorgeous! I wish my hair did that :)
Muffie--that's awesome! Three pounds is a lot. That feels better to step on the scale, eh?
Zoe--you're awesome, too! Keeping five pounds off over the holidays is a big deal . . . as is losing five pounds in December. I love your "articles". Thanks.
Sarah, do you have to wait for your grades? We get our unofficial ones when we finish the test, but sometimes it takes a while for them to be posted on the web site.
