Greetings. Deb is going to put a sticky on this thread and eventually delete the other.

This is the thread where members come to share their journey to wellness and wholeness.

It's a holistic thread, talking about all apects of health, not just diet and exercise, but the mind and spirit as well. Oooh - thanks for the tip Zoe, I might have done that myself. Hopefully I won't forget any steps. :) Thanks for the confidence, I just need to remember that and just be picky about my sterile field. Send positive vibes my way Tuesday evening y'all. ;)

Hey Sarah. I couldn't figure out a way to turn your user name into a nickname ;). I'm an RN student working as an LPN and I find starting IV's are still a little touch and go for me . . . but I haven't been working all that long, so I'm hoping they get easier. I've got the whole process down except for finding that darn vein, LOL. You'll ace your pass-off, I bet--I've got great faith in you :).

I've been gone a bit--been working full-time the last couple of weeks and school started Monday, so my total contribution to health is to try and catch up on sleep! I did go to my cardio class orientation earlier this week. Sounds like a fun class--kind of a do-it-yourself setup. And I'm going to the gym as soon as I can get someone home who's old enough to babysit.

Then I've got to hunker down with High Acuity. Ugh. Only "ugh" because the information is so different than what I've learned so far.

Though I haven't been responding, I've been keeping up with y'all :)

Hey Sarah. I couldn't figure out a way to turn your user name into a nickname ;)

Whenever I see Sarah's username, I think, "Saddle and scope", ha ha

I've been gone a bit--been working full-time the last couple of weeks and school started Monday, so my total contribution to health is to try and catch up on sleep!

I have seen lots of articles lately that say sleep is essential to weight loss (I should be "Twiggy" by now) -- do a search on "sleep and weight loss"; one study is at:

http://www.webmd.com/content/Article/113/110957.htm

Oct. 18, 2005 -- Getting a good night's rest could help you lose weight.

Eight hours of sleep per night might be ideal, researchers report.

They studied 323 men and 417 women in Canada's Quebec province. Those who reported sleeping seven to eight hours per night were leaner than those who noted five or six hours of nightly sleep. (for more see link)

Then I've got to hunker down with High Acuity. Ugh.

I got a couple funny images when you said that. Hunker down with "High Acuity" -- Merriam Webster says:

hunker

One entry found for hunker.

Main Entry: hun-ker

Pronunciation: 'h&[ng]-k&r

Function: intransitive verb

Inflected Form(s): hun-kered; hun-ker-ing /-k(&-)ri[ng]/

Etymology: probably akin to Middle Dutch hucken, huken to squat, Middle Low German hOken to squat, peddle, Old Norse huka to squat

1 : CROUCH, SQUAT -- usually used with down

2 : to settle in or dig in for a sustained period -- used with down

So is "High Acuity" your sweetheart's name? And "hunkering down" with your sweetheart while it's storming outside is not something you like to do?

Or maybe you are referring to this:

acuity

2 entries found for acuity.

Main Entry: acu-ity

Pronunciation: &-'kyü-&-tE, a-

Function: noun

Inflected Form(s): plural -ities

Etymology: Middle English acuite acridity, from Middle French acuité, from Medieval Latin acuitat-, acuitas, from Latin acuere

: keenness of perception : SHARPNESS

So, is High Acuity is a state of awareness you have while you are watching movies ALONE, and waiting for the snow to stop? And you are overly aware of your surroundings and thoughts and feelings?

OR ...

is it just that Zoeboboey's blood sugar is so low that she is only entertaining herself, and is making no sense? (Somebody FEED ME!)

Tune in next time when Zoe says ...

Hey everyone, looks like you're all doing so good!! Reading how well you're all doing gives me the motivation I need. Keep at it!

Ok so I haven't really started my healthy living. Big surprise huh? This morning I took the Real Age Test again and it shows that my Real Age is 30, whereas last time I took it it was 27. Not sure why it's higher now, maybe because my dad recently found out he's a diabetic ... and we didn't know that the last time I took it. But him finding this out is giving me more motivation to get healthier.

I was looking at some healthy living tips that they have on that Real Age site and discovered the 'YOU: On a Diet' healthy eating plan. It sounds like something I could actually stick with. It sounds similar to Eating For Life/Body for Life (which I did last year and did really well on it), but it sounds more realistic for me. I did great with Eating for Life .... I was eating so much more healthier and I felt GREAT. But the exercise portion of it was just not working for me. Strenuous weight-lifting 3 times a week just wasn't for me. This 'YOU: On a Diet' sounds like something I could stick with. It says you need to walk 30 minutes EVERY DAY. I could do that. Although on the days I work I won't be able to. But I'm pretty active while at work. Do you guys think that'd be a problem, not walking on the days I work? Do you guys exercise on your work days? And in addition to that, 3 times a week I'll go to Curves.

I'm going later today to pick up the book. I do much better on plans like this, where the menus/meal plans are written out for me .... it's like I need someone to hold my hand and tell me what to eat. Sheeesh. One day at a time though, right?

Greetings. I worked some overtime and had some hectic days and am feeling it. I'm still hanging on to the cold, just a few sniffles. I'm not doing anything about it, it will run it's course soon. There are people on week 3 and 4 at work with this thing and I only finished up week #1.

Still, I made it to the gym!

Sarah, IV's are fun. It's hit and miss for me lately. Keep up the good work.

Muffie, thanks for sharing your tips. I'm one of those persons that needs a little fat and protein to avoid the slumps. But I'm also more about complex carbs, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Balance works for me, excluding one food group like carbs, or low fat has never worked well for me. That wasn't preaching. That's what this thread is about, we share our tips and what we are doing. Please keep it up!

Rain, I get daily tips from RealAge, but don't always read them. It's a good trustworthy site in my opinion. Good luck!

Zoe, that's interesting about sleep and weight loss. Makes sense, there's a connection between stress, depression and weight gain too.

Hiker, I can relate. School started for me too, plus I'm working overtime. But it's only one class for my BSN, but it's an accelerated Pharm. class, lots of reading.

Blue, that turkey chii sounds good. I used to love making turkey chili but haven't in a while. It's not that hard to do either.

Gentle, best wishes. Please check in when you can.

Hey guys, thanks for the tips, they are AWESOME! and regarding what you two said, I meant to post the following from RealAge which was what you just mentioned:

"Need a diet plan that works? Try YOU: On a Diet, a RealAge-inspired diet program that is helping people grow younger. Here are six diet boosters to help you get started on the path toward feeling -- and looking -- great.

Eat daily: 9 handfuls of fruits and veggies; 1 ounce of nuts; whole-grain breads and cereals

Eat three times a week: Fish (salmon, mahimahi, tilapia, catfish, flounder)

Eat weekly: 10 tablespoons of cooked tomato products

Drink daily: 64 ounces of water; 2 glasses skim milk; glass of wine

Take daily: multivitamin; aspirin; omega-3 fatty acids

Eat sparingly: Processed foods with trans fat or saturated fats; white foods (bread, rice, simple sugar, cream sauce); products with high fructose corn syrup".

I keep meaning to get a pedometer because I, too, am very active at work.

i just read pages one to 25--i'm committed!!!!!

i don't eat no carb- i just eatlower carb than before, [which was just crazy-silly out of control]

i love my wholewheat everything

white bread does not pass these lips

and i'm not non-fat at all---i love my margarine and avocados[skim milk sucks]

wholewheat spaghetti is the best

we should all actually ban the word diet

that word sets you up for failure

obviously we should all be eating this way as we should for the rest of our lives

i prefer lifestyle changes

i have a mantra :white sugar/white flour =evil

i have a two-bite rule for dessert

two bites are enough to get the taste and texture

doesn't matter how unhealthy or sinful

and i use some sayings that are so true :

nothing tastes as good as healthy feels

a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips

oh, that's all for now
