Looking at obtaining a job in Health Science within a high school. What are the pros and cons for these roles?.. Interested to hear your thoughts!! 😀😀

Interviewing on Monday would love to hear your thoughts.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

I'm not clear what the position is.... would you be teaching Health Science?

It would be teaching health science in an high school setting.

Do you have any education/experience as a teacher? Would you need to be licensed as a teacher?

Specializes in PACU.

I know some states are in such need for teachers in science and/or math (STEM type subjects) they are allowing people without teaching certification to teach.

Have you ever taught before?

I have no feedback for you, except to say please come back and tell me how it goes, what the expectations are and if you're going to take it. I'd be very interested in knowing.

Good to know. I've honestly never heard of such a position.

Will you be responsible for developing the curriculum for this program or is it already in place? Are you used to developing lesson plans? I've seen a lot of people struggle with this aspect of teaching if they are new to it or haven't done it before. Can you deal with potential behavior problems? Who am I kidding? You will have to deal with behavior problems at some point. Are you ready for the administration to dump students on you that don't want to be in your class? This is what is done in any related arts classes and yours sounds like it is related arts.

Teaching can be very rewarding. However, for those that have never taught or have not been taught how to teach, it very well may be much harder than you were anticipating. Good luck to you. I hope it works out for you.

Specializes in Hospice / Psych / RNAC.

It use to be that teachers had to have a masters or a 5 year teaching certification. Now days most states are accepting people with a bachelor degree. Believe it or not there is a method to the madness of teaching. If you want the job look up what it takes to teach teenagers.

Where are you located, what kind of kids are they, socioeconomic, etc... Also, are you in a common core state? If you are, then the program is set already but there's a lot to it. Basically, if a kid fails it's the teacher's fault. So much BS IMO. What happened to the parents!

The teacher's union is strong...the teachers don't have to submit to urine testing. I know a few teachers, and if they had to pee they would be canned. Something about their constitutional rights. The future of America is being taught by a bunch of people that fought against being tested for drugs.

STEM, Literacy, and the Common Core Standards...look it up :)

I was a teacher for too many years. Common Core may not actually cover something like Health Sciences. I haven't looked. I'm only familiar with the subjects I actually taught regarding that. However, I know in my district (which has adopted Common Core) their Health Sciences programs (that they specifically want nurses to teach) have to be developed from scratch by those implementing them, which tells me that the Common Core likely doesn't cover that subject.

Yes- you will likely have to get some sort of provisional/emergency certification. In my state all teachers had to have a master's degree within ten years of starting and our certification had to be renewed every five years.

I do not have any experience as teacher. I will be taking 5 teaching courses so that I can get my occupational teaching license.

I do have 2 masters degrees neither of which is teaching. The program is already developed and there is currently a health science teacher at the school. The program is in high demand, so they are hiring another teacher. The program for those that aren't familiar is like HOSA (health occupation students of America). Preparing the students to sit for CNA exam post graduation. My state does have common core.
