Heading out to the Bay Area

Nurses General Nursing

Hi everyone. So it is finally happening. My husband has been recruited to one of the mega tech firms in Northern Cali and we will be moving to the Bay Area within the next 4 mos. I have 5 years exp in acute care, mostly stepdown and ER.

I work in NYC for one of the busiest hospitals in the Bronx. Pay is $48+ an hour and tons of OT. What kind of salary range can I expect in northern Cali? I prefer to stay within San Jose or Santa Clara area. Is pay negotiable? Do most pay for education? I am trying to finish my FNP.

Any freedback will be greatly appreciated.

I make that much outside of the Bay Area. Will generalize a starting base of high 50's/low 60's.

Congratulations to your husband. You guys will be fine.

Specializes in Infusion Nursing, Home Health Infusion.

Health care costs are extremely high in the San Jose area. Many hospitals are unionized, so pay rate is very high from 58 dollars per hour up to 88 per hour.If you work a holiday it is time and a half do tomorrow with one ten hour shift I will make 1000 dollars. Tuition reimbursement is from 1000 to 2000 per calender year.

Stanford is an excellent place to work, I would highly recommend it if you can make it happen.

Being an ED nurse I wouldn't accept anything less than $75/hr personally. If you are closer to the San Jose area your pay will be less than closer to SF.

Keep in mind that they will pay dearly for ED.

Prices and traffic are incredibly bad...kind of like...well the NY area LOL. A lot more hippies though.

Hospitals are union and each hospital's contract will determine where you are placed on the wage/clinical ladder. This will be based on years experience, degree, and possibly any certifications.

New Grads in the south bay start in the high 50's to low 60's an hour not including any differentials. With 5 years experience you will probably make $6-$8 more an hour base pay.

You have the experience which should be very helpful in landing a job in the highly coveted Bay area. Be prepared for high rents and/

or housing prices. I mean really high!

Good luck.
