A coworker admonished another coworker the other day for wearing head to toe red scrubs, solid print. She said not only could it elevate someone's heart rate, it looked kind of sensual. Is this ridiculous? We don't have a dress code that features color restrictions. The only thing frowned upon is cartoon characters. I've heard looking at red can raise your pulse (and looking at blue can "calm" you) but this isn't a cardiac unit.
I never heard about the red causing elevated heart rates. I have heard dementia patients can't see white or black and you look like a floating head lol. We were told to wear brighter colors with dementia patients. I got more compliments from my patients wearing purple or pink then any other color.
That's so interesting! I had never heard of that until just now. Now that I think of it, I get a lot of compliments from my older patients when I wear bright, cheery colors. :)

It made sense after we were told this (the facility I worked at did some crazy training on it) and I noticed a short time later a dementia patient needing to urinate, so we walked him into his room and he decided open his walker basket up and urinate in that and when we told him the toilet was infront of him he yelled no it wasn't and preceded to pee all in his walker.
We said "huh, I guess he cannot see the toilet because it's white."

I don't wear head to toe but my employer requires all nurses to wear red top and black bottoms (with the hospital logo on them). I don't think anyone is worried about it affecting a patient's heart rate.
