HCC ADN Fall 2008 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Anyone applying to Houston Community College for the fall? I signed up today for the HESI. I am scheduled to take it on 3/29. If I do well, they will place me into the summer pharmacology course. I am a little nervous. I would love to hear from any students that are in the program. Any tips on the HESI & the Pharm. class would be helpful! The thought of it... ahhh it boggles my mind! LOL

Thanks!

Hello,

I am already in the program and I am currently taking OB. Make sure that you are persistant and don't expect for anyone to call you back... you need to keep up with your stuff and make sure that everything is right. The HESI has basic information about math but if you haven't taken A&P II you are lost because a lot of the questions come from there. For pharmacology you will have about 4 or 5 different instructors and you can not choose which ones you want because each instructor does a different lecture on the body system. Get use to that system because that is how all the classes are... You are not going to have one instructor for lecture but you will have many. Also I passed pharm with a 89.4 without reading the book and just consentrating on the notes. I do not recommend that but now because they are cutting on the details of the notes because the instructors do expect you to read to the book. Once you are in the nursing program expect to say good bye to everything including sleep and peace of mind. I am currently trying to complete a care plan for L&D and I am drawing a blank so I know I will no sleep night. Also once you are in the program you get assigned a clinical instructor for each subject. If you are lucky you will get Mr. DeLaCruz for fundamentals and she is very easy with the grading but is you get Mrs MC get ready to no sleep. Pediactrics is very hard but I did manage to pass it with a B. I would recommend to buy the book 2 months before class starts and start reading because you will not pass that class if you don't read and you need to read the entire book in about 6 weeks and you will get tested 5 times within 8 weeks. For some funny reason I have been stuck with the thoughest instructors but some people are lucky and get the easy going ones... is just your luck. Mrs Grant, Mrs. Smith, Mrs Wooten, and Mrs. Mosqueta are one of my favorite instructors but beware if you get stuck with Mrs. Rolle, Mrs. Oby, Mrs McCarthy. I really like the program and I have made good friends... I wish you all good luck.

Thanks Madlc, all your information was great! I really like to hear from the students themselves what they think of the professors! that's why I love ratemyprofessor.com! I wish you the best in your ob class! hopefully we will see each other on campus soon!

Hey everyone, there has been a change at HCC. We have to go to the coleman campus to register & pay for Pharmacology. You cannot do this over the phone anymore. Also, there will not be a class at Town & Country. They are all at the Coleman campus and one at the Shiners Hospital. People are starting to register so I guess I will go up there today to take care of this. What a hassle.

Anyone go to HCC's nursing program with a Bachelors. Were you able to get financial aid? How did you pay for the program. Did you or do you work during the program?

Thanks,

Adrian

Yes go to the room where the secretary is. Tell them you want to register for pharmacology, then she will pull your file to make sure that you meet all requirements. I registered for the saturday class.

I hear about a few people working and some that just cant handle it. My hubbys cousin is in her 2nd semester at HCC. She started the program working full time during the day and school during the evening. Well, she said that didn't last for long! She is now working 20 hours and its still hard to manage her time (she doesnt have kids either)! Everyone is different. She works for hospital and they are paying for her tuition. I dont qualify for financial aid either.

Did you sign up for Pharmacology yet? I am doing the saturday class.

I may try to work at least part-time. That all depends on what I am able to recieve in student loans, ect. I'm sure I could pay for the program if I keep my current job but, it's full-time. I don't know what I will do.

I plan on registering for pharmacology on Monday. I havent decided which class I will take. I will probably end up doing the Saturday class or taking it online.

I called the financial aid dept., and they already said that I do not qualify for any money. Theres a few scholarships that I can try they said since I filled out my FAFSA early. So we will see!

I am not happy about giving up my saturdays the WHOLE entire summer. We travel a lot so, it really sucks! I dont have a choice if I want to keep my current job. There is no way I can do the 4-6.30pm class... my current employer will not be happy about me getting off at 3pm to make it in time! Plus GAS & PARKING in the med center ughhh... so thats why I chose the saturday class. You may want to find out about the online class. I hear the pass rate is horrible. Keep us updated :)

Yea, I saw a pass rate for that online class of something like 5% which was pretty disheartening. I think you should only consider it if you're highly self-motivated...
