Anyone applying to Houston Community College for the fall? I signed up today for the HESI. I am scheduled to take it on 3/29. If I do well, they will place me into the summer pharmacology course. I am a little nervous. I would love to hear from any students that are in the program. Any tips on the HESI & the Pharm. class would be helpful! The thought of it... ahhh it boggles my mind! LOL
Thanks!
I have a question for those that were lucky enough to actually receive "packets" versus the email that most of us received:
Besides general informational pages, what all FORMS did the packet contain OTHER than the physical form (which I already have)?
I want to make sure I have everything together so I can just turn it all in when I'm there on Tues. and just be done with all of this.
Not that it's a problem for me, but it seems like the high school diploma thing would be a given since you have to have graduated high school to have taken any college courses. Thanks for the heads up!
I said the same thing and if you are already an HCC student they should already have transcripts
Hey Jason,
The following are the required textbooks (I DO NOT BUY "RECOMMENDED"):
-Stedman's Medical Dictionary
-Fundamentals of Nursing (with "skills checklists")
-Brunner's Textbook (with study guide AND handbook)
All of which are available from Lippincott (lww.com).
The cheapest way to buy them is to buy some of their "packages" that they sell instead of each item individually.
You can buy EVERYTHING you need from Lippincott (using the coupon code I mentioned previously for 20% off: WXP2706D)
I have attached an Adobe PDF file that shows exactly what your shopping cart at LWW.com should look like. The total comes out to around $265 (about $200 less than what HCC's bookstore charges for the same books).
In my "sample" shopping cart, and also personally, I bought the study guide to accompany the Fundamentals of Nursing book as well, (although it's not "required"), because the study guide for the Pharmacology text was, in my opinion, very helpful for test prep purposes. If you would like, you are more than welcome to buy the package that does not have this study guide (saves about $20).
The reason I didn't put the third book in my previous post about Lippincott is that HCC's bookstore had their price as TBA/TBD and I wanted to wait and see what their price actually was before choosing LWW over HCC's bookstore (LWW's is still cheaper).
I've pretty much told everyone I know about this deal, lol. Helps to offset some of the other expenses of nursing school.
(NOTE: The "shopping cart" in the pdf file shows a quantity of 2 medical dictionaries, you only need one, this was a mistake on my part when making the pdf)
trina,
the only three books that show as required for the course based on published information are:
- "stedman's med.dict.f/hlth.prof...-w/cd"
- "fund.of nursing text w/video+skills txt"
- "brunners textbk med.surg.nsg+s/g+hdbk"
these books are all new (as the last semester the course was taught [spring '08] they were using a completely different set of materials from a completely different publisher).
the book "fundamentals of nursing..." was authored by taylor. i'm not sure if this is the same book you are mentioning or if the book you are mentioning was a different book that was used in a previous semester.

Jason,
Both physician's assistants and nurse practitioners must practice under the supervision of an actual physician and therefore are allowed to perform physicals for their supervising physician, even if the physician isn't actually present for the actual examination itself.
