Hazing of New Grads

I was spanked with a wooden paddle by the charge nurse. After each paddle I had to shout out "Thank you maam, can I have another!" just like in Animal House.

It scarred me.

Are you serious? Do you think hospitals actually condone "Hazing"? Nurses eating their young occurs everywhere sadly. We've all experienced it in one form or another. It's how you deal with it. If you let it get to you and get you down then perhaps you will need to grow a thicker skin.

The only hospitals I know of that have a union is U of M, Crittenton, and Genesys. Union doesn't always mean better though.

Just wanted to add, I was picked on terribly by an older nurse that I worked with. She was one of those "I worked in every area of nursing" nurses. Know-it-all is what I called her. One day she came in and flipped out because the wrong room number was on the patient's flowsheet. WHat she didn't know is that we moved a patient from bed 11 to bed 1. We didn't get a chance to change the labels but the patient's name and MRN number were on the flowsheets. Needless to say, she went off on me about it saying that she could make a mistake if she looked at the wrong room number when passing meds. I told her "I thought we learned in Fundementals of Nursing that we use the patient's name and ID number when preparing and administering meds. Isn't that basic Nursing 101?". She never made another snarky comment to me after that.

thank u turnleftside for sharing your experience as the forum asked of u. in the forum i stated that i am a "nursing student" reading other forums on this site (outside of michigan) there have been numerous new grads reporting sexual harassment from doctors, verbal & physical abuse from nurse managers & md's. this is very serious to me as i am entering into this profession and hear of fellow nurses enduring this type of torment. this site was created to give people a support system and since i have joined i have gained a realistic view of what nursing truely entails. i have very thick skin & i believe my skin is too thick, i don't & refuse to tolerate crap from anyone (including people on this site!!!). god is the head of my life, no man/woman can ever step beyond being a man/woman in my presence. i also refuse to act like this doesn't exist and i haven't read it. the goal of this forum is to educate myself in all aspects of nursing to allow me to be a better nurse. i think many people should try to explore all aspects of this site and not just those that may pertain to only their needs and maybe some people can become better educated and understand why some of these discussions are coming about- because they exist & yes the word hazing has been used to describe some forms of treatment of new grads on this site. just because this is the first time it has been mentioned in a michigan forum doesn't mean this isn't happening in michigan/ elsewhere. this gives opportunities for michigan new grads a chance to vent if needed. if u have no such experience don't post anything! i advise every nurse & student to educate yourselves on what is going on within the nursing community. many of u will get a rude awakening and understand why there is such a shortage in the only field that has a waitlist in almost every school. i am in the field of nursing because i have a love and passion for it, no "man" can steer me away from the path that god has prepared for me god bless :heartbeat

well lets start acting like it and start reading and gaining info to back up our comments. this isn't the place for that! unfourtunately, some comments don't sound like they are from experienced nurses educated on the events occurring in their community (just my opinion). take off the blinders and ear plugs and lets get real. don't ignore things because they aren't happening to u anymore. why should those of us with "thick skin" only defend ourselves and see those "thin skinned" nurses get tormented. those "thin skinned" nurses make great nurses and make the jobs of the "thick skinned" nurses easier. remember it's about the patient, why should someone that has been worn down from tourment of other nurses change professions when they could make a difference in nursing. i don't recall seeing any of this being necessary qualifications from hospitals are hiring these people (must have "thick skin"). i refuse to live my life as a nurse drugged out to deal with the idiots in my profession and i would do anything to support my peers and be sure that they too don't have to live their lives that way. if i gotta do it alone so b it, i will get my blessing later on. we all have families and a life outside of this profession. something 2 think about.
