Hazing of New Grads

Published

hello all :specs:

i have been reading through many forums on this site and there are many topics that have disturbed me. the one imparticular is the hazing and unethical treatment of "new grads". i just wanted to shine light on this from a michigan perspective. i am a nursing student and eager to know which hospitals if any condone that type of mistreatment in michigan. are there any (southeastern) new grads that have any experiences that they would like to share where they felt they were being targeted, fozen out, or hazed. in addition, are there any hospitals in michigan with a union? anyone work @ or know anything about the va hospital.

thank in advance. god bless :heartbeat

I was spanked with a wooden paddle by the charge nurse. After each paddle I had to shout out "Thank you maam, can I have another!" just like in Animal House.

It scarred me.

i do not think it hazing per say, but you are competition plain and simple. i worked at a job that was a private practice and there was 15 nurses, and believe me it was whatever the nurses want and that was the end of the story. it is sad but no matter what line of work you go into the established staff is going to think of you as the "person that one day might take my job". it happens all the time people being passed up for the new improved worker.

just do not let it get to you and just be the best nurse you can be, you worked this hard to get where you are so do not let anyone take that from you. just think 20 years down the road you may be the one glaring at the new happy nurse that just recieved her license.;)

oh, and my hubby works for a place that has a union and believe me they only save you if they want to. there are many times that people there get treated better than others and the union reps look away because either they think that person is a whiner, or they are to lazy to deal with it.

good luck to you, if it really is bad in the hospitals you can always be a hospice nurse and shine a little light into the days of someone that is dying, they appreciate every kind word, and there is less working with other nurses.

hi shannonmarie7,

i never even considered that they were trying to protect their jobs, that is very interesting. it is sad that this is the norm in the hospital, but thats the reality of it. i forgot all about hospice, u r very right about the difference in patient care & enviornment. how does ur husband like working in a union hospital? is it really more pay/better benifits? thanks for the info. :D

I think you need to calm the heck down. Good grief. You are jumping to so many conclusions, using all that precious energy that you'll need to study.

Calm down, darlin'.

i pm'd ya!!!:D

Lmbo!!! Mysimpleplan i am gonna take ur advice & save my energy 4 studying ( I'm naturally fiesty and my passion 4 nursing just gives me that extra push) I am taking my daily chill pill dose. Thanks 4 bringin me down a notch.

OK, good.

Now that you're a bit calmer, can I tell you I've never been hazed, nor treated badly as a new nurse, and neither have my friends. The majority of your future colleagues want you to succeed and do well, and be a good addition to their/your unit. Of course you'll run into the grumpy ones, but that's more about them than you.

Your job right now is to learn how to be a great nurse and get through nursing school. If you don't like what you see when you get into the hospital setting, then be an agent for change. I am betting you'll do well. Good luck!

thanks for sharing mysimpleplan:specs:

i am glad that you & ur friends have had a wonderful experience & career in nursing! thank u 4 shining light on the brighter side & 4 the encouragement. i am feeling more @ ease in all aspects of nursing now that i have a support system that is willing to be truthful (even when i may not wanna hear the truth, i need it) about the field. i am sure i will enjoy my experience as a nurse just as u & ur friends have.;)

Well, not every day, LOL. But overall, yes - very satisfying. Just keep your eye on the prize and keep that enthusiastic attitude of yours.

Laughter is like medicine to the soul! Lighten up and don't take EVERYTHING so seriously. You were very rude and it was uncalled for as a Professional who claims to have such THICK skin!

I have found the people on this site to be kind and supportive while maintaining a sense of humor (which you're lacking). If nursing school alone has you this stressed perhaps you might want to rethink your choice of becoming a nurse.

deybozz thanks 4 ur 2 cents, but i'm gonna have to move past ur advice and not take it.

you should take ur own advice and laugh a little. stop taking things so personally. yes, i am guilty of being to serious, but i am big enough to admit that..... this forum is a learning experience, if u have a problem with me learning then thats ur problem, not mine. personal attacks isn't gonna get u anywhere with me. mayb u should try taking one of mysimpleplans chill pills ;)
