Have been told LPN BAD idea

Published

I have been told by several people that LPN degree is basically useless now and that it would only offer me the option of working in a nursing home and that the pay is horrible. I can't change my current work schedule and don;t know if I could pass a full time AS or BSN program. Any advice would be fantastic at this point as I'm feeling rather discouraged.

New to the medical lingo...what is an ED?

Sorry! That's Emergency Department.

I am a LPN and I work in a county jail. Many of the RNs I work with say they don't understand how I do what I do in an efficient manner. Becoming an LPN is not a waste of time and it is actually rewarding if you put in the work.

I have always heard LPN/LVN's will be phased out, but that has never happened. Where I work, they are supposedly phasing them out but I just saw a new hire LVN in the last few months. However, the others are right....you won't likely see more than $50,000 unless you work a second job.

That's bull..I was told the same thing, I'm an LPN now and I make bet 24 and 28hr.. I work with the long branch school district. I couldn't go straight for bsn either, so I did this first to get my foot in the door. and per diem makes good money too. Do whats best for you, you can then do lpn to rn programs, but at least you will be a nurse and gain experience in the meantime. I get why did u waste your time? etc.. people are so ridiculous not everyone has the time or opportunity to go straight for RN, I would have loved to do that but then I would have had no job no income and it wouldn't work for me so I did lpn first. Good luck!

maybe in places like NYC and the big cities in Cali

but everywhere else I can't see them being phased out..

hospitals obviously but there'll be needs in outpatient, ltc, and home care for awhile imo

schools ain't pumping out enough RNs to keep those places afloat and while the baby boomers are still working, they'll be retiring sooner than later.

Not true at all. Schools are pumping out too many Rn's actually.

not in my area...plenty of RN jobs out there. That's why prefaced it by mentioning NYC and Cali. I'm sure other major cities fall right in that category

I was worried about going LPN...now you're saying there are no RN jobs? I am close to NYC so I'm sure that will affect the job market by me.

Personally I would do what's best for you. However, the responses you've received on this thread is spot-on. LVNs make money depending on the geographic area and not only in Nursing homes. I'm in an LVN program and it's challenging and I know for a fact that it will serve as a foundation for when bridge into an RN or BSN program. I could be taking pre-reqs and wait to get into an RN program but I rather get into the Nursing Field quicker than waiting 3 or 4 years to get into an RN program. I also didn't want to consider Nursing when I younger but since then being in an LVN program it made me realize and has motivated me to take my education further. Good luck though.

Plenty of hospitals still use LPN/LVNS too.

Working in a nursing home certainly isn't for everyone. But, to say "the pay is horrible" in LTC is just plain wrong in the vast majority of job markets.

LTC is a rather unpopular choice in the nursing world, and employers have a hard time keeping facilities staffed. Its sort of a trade-off. Many of the negative things you hear about working in LTC are true. But, as a LPN, you'll have a hard time finding a feild were you'd be compensated better.
