Has anyone used an e-book instead of a textbook?

Published

My chemistry textbook is a new edition and its $225, but I found the ebook where I can print up to 150% pages and its only $83. Would it be a good idea to purchase the ebook version of the textbook?

I've used an e-book. It's really up to you. I tend to stay around computers so it was easy for me to use an e-book that way. One of the things to consider is if you're one of those ppl who like to have a book with them during class. B/c then you'll have to have some form of access to see it during class time. Otherwise, it's all good IMO

I think it really depends on what your prefer/how you learn. I did the e-book for stats and there were some interactive exercises that really helped me learn. For A&P/Micro/Chem I carried my book everywhere to 'study' so I really wanted those instead of the e-book. Make your choice on how you learn and what feels comfy to you. Either way will work!

My A&P book came with a CD that had a copy of the book on it. I ended up using that over the book. It was much easier to study at the library and work out my lab homework or type up a study guide. My favorite part about it was the search function... it made everything so easy and quick. However, I usually never take notes in my book. If I did, I probably wouldn't have used the CD/e-book.

I love e-books, and am always a little bummed when a course I take doesn't offer an e-book.

But like the others said, it's really up to your learning style. If you're the type of person who likes to highlight in your book, or write notes in the margins, and e-book might not be a great choice for you (although some interactive PDF's allow for highlighting, etc.).

I very rarely feel the need to highlight or write notes, and like the portability of being able to access my book from my iPhone or my computer at work. I'd never get all my reading done if I need to exclusively use physical books!

Are you interested in an e-book for the convenience of not having a hardcopy textbook or just because of cost? Renting your textbook is also an inexpensive option. There are a few websites online that rent, just do a Google search.

I brought this up on another forum. I had a statistics e-book but ended up buying a copy also. I had a lot of eye strain using just the online book.

Oh thanks I found it for $50 on chegg.com. I forgot I could rent books.

Yes, I get some of my books as e-books from Coursesmart.com almost every semester. Saves a ton$$ and saves me from carrying around a heavy text book.

I am using an ebook for my summer nutrition course.

I actually don't prefer it though because I always have to click on the PDF link

in order to see images of charts and such clearly.

Chegg is awesome, although I sometimes flip-flop between them and BookRenter for the cheapest rental. Just today got my textbook from Chegg for the fall ... $37. Better than $80 @ bookstore! And I was definitely not looking to keep this book either (it's on ethics) :D
