Has anybody heard of this? AVM & Brain Abscess.

Hi, all. My father is currently in the hospital for a brain abscess- at least that's his primary Dx for now. He was initially a R/O tumor with a secondary Dx of pneumonia. We haven't talked to the neuro doc yet- I think he's only consulted with the Internal Medicine doc so far. But, the IM doc came up late last night and said that my Dad has an AVM (not pneumonia, as previously thought), and he was told that the AVM could have caused the brain abscess. Has anybody here heard of this? If so, how common is it, and what is the usual course of Tx? The IM doc had never heard of this, either, so he couldn't tell me much.

The doc said the abscess was about 2-3 cm, and he's currently on Levaquin for now. He is also anemic, has facial telagiectases, and a Hx of nosebleeds & H/A's. They're scoping him this AM, because of the anemia, and a bowel "abnormality" found on an Abd. CT. He's supposed to have an open MRI after the holiday- he's a big guy, and has to go out of the facility for it.

How worried should I be about this? My Dad is not one to go to a GP for regular checkups, and I'm wondering if this is congenital, or if he's at risk for other problems because of this- stroke, aneurysm, etc. Any experience or info about this would be helpful. I feel somewhat helpless about it, because it's not something I've never heard of CVM causing brain abscesses. The good news is that I think this helps in R/O'ing a brain tumor- I guess we'll know more on that after the MRI, though.

Wishing you and your father the best. My sister has an AVM that causes her headaches. But they aren't doing anything about it right now. Best wishes.

Thanks again for the prayers. He smiled at me tonight when I left- a good sign. He will be having his crani tomorrow afternoon. His neurosurgeon seems really kind and laid back- isn't that a switch? He's taking all of this better than I thought he would- he's taken homeopathic meds/folk remedies all of his life..not one to take kindly to being in a hospital. The staff have all done a great job with him- especially with Tx's and meds, since he's not being the most compliant patient, I'm sure.

my prayers go out to you and your father and his wife sometimes is never rains but what is pours....

my son had memory loss and they did a mri and ct scan and they came up with a dx of brain tumor ///after crani they said no tumor but inflamed arteries in brain....after horrible chem for inflamed arteries they changed dx again....they still don't know what his problem is but it has been 3 years and his short term memory is still very poor but he is prysically ok no residual effect from crani which has me scared to death

again i hope all goes well with your dad

Good thoughts for your Dad (and the rest of your family).

Hi- well, He's recovering slowly but surely after his crani Thursday night. For smoe reason, he is having right sided neuro deficits (weird, because the abscess was on the right)...he also has new onset A fib...I think he may have some vegetation on a valve. Anyway, he's not out of the woods yet, but we're in it for the long haul. Thanks for the prayers- they must've done some good. :)
