Hardest class so far...

Published

What has been your hardest class so far? I haven't started my program yet, and was just looking for insight from those of you who have.

Thanks!

so glad to know I'm not the only one who STRUGGLED through micro. I was so burnt out on labs after that class....anyone a student at sac city extended campus? i'm starting in january, looking for the inside scoop! :D

Not to scare you or anything, but pre req classes have nothing on nursing classes...Nursing classes are so different..You have to learn how to study different, the tests are different, and stuff like that. You can no longer just memorize a bunch of information and hope to pass the tests that way. In nursing, you have to KNOW the information, and use the information you know to figure stuff out, like how to prioritize crap, do this, do that, etc...I'm in my second year of nursing school, and I still don't think I have the studying figured out.. :banghead:

I am in my 4th semester and originally i thought pathophysiology was pretty hard but had my hardest time in Cardiac. I just made a passing grade. Also, cardiac has never been my thing. I am currently in ortho-neuro and that seems pretty hard as well.

I am in my 4th semester with 4 weeks left and I for sure know that I don't have the studying figured out. I have figured out that the use of the NCLEX book review questions are helpful as well as the end of chapter questions. I have noticed my instructor will take questions from them or switch them around. Nursing school is a whole new ball game. I have always thought of myself to be an A. B, student but have realized the way the grading scale is I just give up on getting an A in every class but I do still try my hardest.

I'm in my 3rd semester of NS and I thought my anatomy prereq was the hardest.

Specializes in EMS, ER, GI, PCU/Telemetry.

i just graduated last month.... my hardest pre-req was chemistry and hardest nursing class was OB and peds (god i hated everyday of that semester).

best of luck in your studies!

I think the hardest thing about nursing school is the stress to be pumping out care plans and having a test every two weeks. I kept thinking through school (I am an RN now!) that the content itself really wasn't necessarily that hard, but the pace we were going through it and the fact that I spent 8-10 hours on my "no school" days writing care plans really was more the problem.

So much depends on your instructors. Some clinical instructors are really helpful, while others make you feel like you are just a bundle of nerves the whole day -- HATED those clinicals. I wanted to say "I am a STUDENT learning this stuff, don't give me the third degree on stuff I didn't even learn yet in front of a patient and their family!" Some instructors seem to be in it for the power. A lecture teacher who makes everything just fit together is a gift, but unfortunately there are plenty of lecture teachers who really can't teach and you'll have to really dig all the info yourself out of the books. Those are the teachers who will tell you that you shouldn't have to be spoonfed and that you are an adult and will have to learn it for yourself. Since you are paying for school, the lectures should dovetail with the texts and resources you have, and teachers with that attitude are just lazy and should think about moving on. In my nursing school and the other one in my area, the classes that people dreaded and many people failed were because of a beastly instructor, not the content. That is wrong. By the way, I know many people stated that micro was the hardest prereq. I had one of the best college professors I have ever had for that class (and nursing is my second degree/second career), and I LOVED that class. It was challenging, but the professor had huge passion for the subject and presented it in the most logical (and humorous) way -- and we never even looked at the textbook. He was one in a million, and he made a complete difference in terms of what I thought about the class. We need more teachers like him.

The other hard thing about nursing school is that most of the tests are worded like NCLEX questions, and you can study your brains out and still walk away from a test having NO idea how you did since you often have to guess between several correct answers to pick the "best" one, or you even have to pick the "best" out of 4 choices that all are wrong. Having a degree in anther field, I never got why nursing school is like this. Nursing instructors all tell you that you need to be a "critical thinker," and many act like the only people in the world who are "critical thinkers" are nurses. Sometimes you just have to roll your eyes. The best thing to do to get through it is just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Don't worry about what is ahead and just concentrate on getting through what you are doing right now. Eventually you will be done, and I can tell you that is a GREAT feeling.

i agree it all depends on the teacher. My anatomy class was the hardest because the final was drawing 3 very random questions out of a hat then explaining it (teaching it) to the teacher on the white board. So if you miss 1 the highest grade you could get was a 66%

pre-reqs: hands down microbiology

nursing school(so far): Pathophysiology/Pharmacology-combined in my school

Pre-reqs - I had an F in Psychology. It wasn't a tough class, but the teacher was horrible and boring, I did not have any motivation whatsoever in that class. But I do know that it was hard.

Nursing School - Definitely Obstetrics. As a man, I had a hard time understanding women from the clinical standpoint.
