What a tempest in a teapot. You should read some of the ill-informed verbal diarrhea being posted on the Journal and Calgary Herald websites.

I agree... dysentery is caused by parasites and usually involves frank blood in the stool so this guy should be having his kid checked out if she really does have dysentery and not simply diarrhea!

i don't blame the dad for being upset. would you just blow something like this off? i wouldn't. there are so many unanswered questions about this vaccine as it is. the parents were hesitant to get it for their child in the first place and then she gets the amount an adult would get. she's only 3 1/2!!! the father is probably more scared for his child than anything else...her immune system is probably so weak now responding to the vaccine that her body won't be able to defend itself against the other viruses she is susceptibile to. the father spoke in the heat of the moment...out of anger...but he still needs and deserves compassion. i imagine this nurse feels horrible and is praying for herself as well as the little girl that there are no consequences to her mistake.

The main thing that has been reported after H1N1 vaccinations is a sore muscle. It sounds as if the child was brewing up a seasonal cold prior to the vaccination.

If she was having a truly "bad reaction" it would have been observed before the Health Department called the family to inform them of the mistake.

There is upset and there is being a PITA and Dad hits the working nurses that have read this as a PITA

At one time, my child was given an overdose of medication, fortunately no harm came of it. I was annoyed about it, however I did not consider going after the nurse that made the error.

The thing that I don't like about this situation is that this parent keeps telling every media source available that this nurse should lose her licence. I do agree that perhaps some more education needs to be undertaken by this nurse but how many nurses have never made a med error where someone received the wrong med or dose, yet no harm came of it. If every nurse lost their licence for a med error, there would be few of us left. Because I have made a med error in my time, I know for certain that this nurse likely feels just terrible about this and will never forget it.

Agree, many people not just nurses make mistakes, we are after all human, we should be able to learn from mistakes and try for it not to happen again or by someone else. This is a time for learning and risk assessments not a witch hunt. Can you see how many mistakes are not learnt from if everyone was afraid to put their hands up and say "Hey.............."

No excuses, but all the misinformation in the media AND coming from our leaders and experts. It is fortunate that only 11 mistakes were made. There was and still is opportunity for more mistakes. She is responsible.. but only to learn from the mistake

(which she has).

I think this will likely result in a complaint to the college and a disciplinary hearing for the nurse, hope this is not her first job as it is going to be hard enough to find work without this following her around.

I think the above poster is right, it likely will result in some sort of hearing at the CNO. I guess we all live in fear of having a disciplinary hearing for a med error.
