Gynaeoncology Ward What to Expect for Students

Published

Hey!

I'm about to start my gynaeoncology ward in a few weeks, i was wondering if any one should know what to expect.. I've been asked to write a plan of clinical skills I would like to achieve and I seem to have blank on these.. so far I have put..

-participate in drug rounds

-Put in and take out female catheter

-Practice and become more confident at drawing up injections

-Give an IM injection

Now I'm blank. Can anyone think of anything else that may be available or that all students should try and achieve before qualifying.. Thanks!

What is within the scope of a nurse in gynecology? Start there. U.S. is limited by scope and limitations of the facility.

Don't know what your scope of practice includes but when I worked gynie we pulled vag packing, inserted and removed butterfly needles for pain control, staple and suture removal, lots of education on recovery period, lots of questions asked about sexuality and birth control post op. Read up on PCA pain control, epidurals, we had gynie cancers on the unit, so some chemo reading might be helpful

Depending on where the hospital is located (mine is inner city) we had a few patients who were victims of sexual abuse and required repair work and social worker/victims services support.

A few ideas:

Management of post op patients.

Understanding of a variety of gynae conditions.

maybe get a chance to go to theatre to see something.

Management of early pregnancy bleeds, miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies.

Communication, think of how you'd approach this in this specific patient group.

If you're located in quite a multicultural area maybe consider learning about identifying FGM and potential safeguarding issues related to this for the patient and any daughters they may have.

Does the ward have a early pregnancy clinic? Or a high risk assessment service? These are a massive learning curve which I found out how compassionate nurses can be. The ward had a evaluation and assessment service for women who had been assulted as obviously there were no male patients so it was considered psychologically safer. Research about domestic violence.
