In the current institution that i am in, i've seen very few male nursing students. Some say they're just forced to by their mums; others go for the big salary...
the growing population of nurses today include mostly the females, as i see it.
My Reasons:
Originally interested in medical field in general, wanted to be an anesthesiologist.
Found out about nurse anesthesia and almost dropped my undergrad degree at Virginia Tech to do that instead. but decided to wait it out and at least try for med school
Shadowed and applied to med school, didnt get in.
Applied to nursing school, got in.
Here are my reasons I am happy with how everything worked out
1. Nurses are the actual go getters and do all'ers which fits my personality.
2. Nursing requires both brain and brawn which is what i want. I didn't want to sit at a desk all day.
3. Nurse anesthesia offers better hours, better lifestyle, but still a great salary.
4. My job security will be fantastic.
5. I work better with women than I do with men. I am not gay but men intimidate me slightly in the work place.
6. I do not have Liability Insurance like doctors do.
7. I get to interact with patients on a more personal level
8. My best subject is science and i live for science.
9. It's challenging
can't think of much more. My only hesitation was being a male nurse. but once I get over that insecurity I think i will be totally happy.
My reasons:
1. my mother wants me to be a nurse, I can just remember her reaction when I told her I was hesitant to take up nursing
2. I want to be a doctor (neurosurgeon) and help neuropatients... cuz my dad died cuz of brain CA, and when I was young, I had this promise to myself to help.. I hope I can... And I believe in order to be a very good doctor, I need to learn how to look at patients holistically---and that is learned in nursing
3. i heard comments from people i know that its fun ( though its very stressful, we still learn how to experience fun)

... probably the same reasons "the ladies" use for going into the profession... What does gender have to do with it? Do we like when it's asked why women go into welding or some male dominated field?
I'm getting ready to start a nursing program myself...taking A&P now. After 17 years in education I still don't feel like I do anything rewarding. But I want to stay in a field with people--'cause I'm a 'people person'. I can't believe that at 37 years of age I'm going to start all over again. But I know that down the road it will all be worth it.

Go for it man!! don't worry about your age, I switched majors to nursing after 3 years of studying computer science. I'm now 29 and graduate this April 2009. My dad left my mom when she was 36, and she went to school to become a teacher at 36 years old with 4 kids and being a single mother. Just think of it, when you're 41 years old, if you hadn't decided to start nursing, you'd still be 41 years old and teaching, now you'll be 41 or 42 and you'll be doing what you really want to do. There's a 38 year old lady in my BSN program. Much respect to you, you'll do great!
Guys have many reasons for becoming nurses. Mine personally was that I needed a steady job that could offer me a six figure salary, time with my family and the chance to make the world a better place. Another big push for me was that I grew up in a medical family, my dad is an MRT and my mom is an MSN, so going into the medical field (despite my original plans to go into law) seemed like the right thing to do. I've been around nursing most of my life so it was like "going home" in a sense. The final push was my wife and I entering nursing school together. She decided she wanted to become a nurse and I was already on the fence, that just helped pull me off the fence on onto the other side. So there you go, another guys reasoning for becoming a nurse. I suppose if your single, it's a good way to meet girls too.

The main reason I'm in college for nursing is the same as any female.. I want to care for others. Simple as that.
An added reason is that I love foreign cultures and languages (German and Swedish so far) and nurses can swap hospitals far easier than doctors. I'm looking to work as a civilian for the Army in Germany or Sweden when I finish schooling. They will pay out student loans too!
Again, main reason, I want to truly help others in what is probably the scariest time of their life.
