In the current institution that i am in, i've seen very few male nursing students. Some say they're just forced to by their mums; others go for the big salary...
the growing population of nurses today include mostly the females, as i see it.
My husband's main reason was the large number of job openings (although, he hasn't really managed to find a good one). After 15 years as a cop/detective he needed a new field to work in. It's hard to believe he could go from threatening, intimidating, and occasionally roughing up people, to caring for them. He does best with older people, though. I think his old instincts would kick in with the younger population.
Let me just say that if the top priority for a male to join this field of nursing is money, the second priority better be to help people. If helping people isn't even in the top 3 or 4 then they better not even consider this profession. What is the point of nursing if you don't sincerely have it in you to help a stranger out? If money is it, then you will probably get burnt out in the future and/or you will be giving subpar patient care for those that really deserve much more. Its like finding out your parents were paid to raise you and nothing more.
I think my reasons are the same as many others on here. I've always wanted to go into medicine, but don't have the patience for med school. Nursing has great pay, Im able to help others, many opportunities, flexibility. I've been stuck in corporate America for quite some time, never have liked it..but that's where all of my experience lies. Very unsatisfying...some people love it, but not for me. I'm starting my nursing program this Spring and pretty excited about it.
I wanted to change careers and go into the medical field. I wanted to become a doctor, but then decided that at this point in my life, I needed to start making money sooner, so I went with nursing, and then I want to go on to nurse anesthetist school. I graduate from my ABSN program at the beginning of May. I can't wait, because I have hated almost everything about nursing school. I just can't wait to become a nurse anesthetist...a much better fit for me.
I've been a PTA (Physical Therapist Assistant) for the past 11 years and in all that time the only thing that has changed in my job is the locations that I've worked.
I am going to begin an evening/weekend ADN program in 2 weeks and am very excited to start my new CAREER. I want to be a nurse because I want more lateral flexibility within my chosen profession. I like the idea of having almost limitless options of what kind of nursing that I can do. I also really enjoy the patient care aspect of my current job, but am looking forward to having a more important impact on a patients recovery in the acute stages.
Being around women...but most on my unit as older and married. The few that are worth looking at, are married, with child, or in relationships. I now wish the continuous estrogen river would stop flowing in my direction.
Main reasons...good pay, security, benefits, indoor job, advancement opportunities, etc.

The same reason most females give: I wanna help people in need and I have a "calling" of some sort to do so. I'm coming over from the GIS industry and the boredom of sitting at computer screens and doing a lot of solo work has really gotten to me. I like being around people and helping them out, so Nursing feels like the right choice.
Plus the perks aren't too bad either
