let me begin by stating the following, this has only happened to me once... and so it goes, i was rushing to my work when the flash-lights of the patrol-car came into view in my rear-view mirror. needless to say i thought "s*## now i'm gonna be late for sure" i pulled out my i.d. and registration before the officer asked as i heard him say "doc, did you realized you were doing 80 on a 65 speed zone, are you in some kind of hurry or something? i said "i'm going to work sir, my apologies for speeding i"... he then interrupted me by saying "are you going to st.joseph's hosp.?" i said "yes" he then said "well doc, i'll give you an escort since i'm headed that way and step on it" before i could say anything he got in his car... i think since i was wearing my scrubs and had my stethoscope around my neck he assume that i was a physician... therefore, i'm guilty for not correcting him on my line of work..my question is, has this happened to any of you?

Many, many times. If I'm in my uniform and I get stopped the strongest thing I get is a warning. Here in this section of South Jersey the police have given me a pass more than once. One did asked me where I was going. I said that I was going to work at Happy Dale, (not the name of the local Psych hospital) He said, "I'll give you an escort and when we get there I'll pray for you, At lease as a cop they give me a .45 what to they give you?" I said, "A set of keys"He laugh and said "Oh, There's goin' be some praying tonight!" I once ask a policeman why don't the cops in this section give me tickets. He said "We never know when we go on duty if we will be shot that night and the last thing we need is a ****** off nurse or doctor working on us." So that may be the reason "Doc" That is why if I get a policeman for a patient I give him/her the best care that I can give.
I was also told I had respect as a psych nurse because, while they may haul 'em in, and ED may have to treat 'em, WE are the ones that are "stuck" with 'em!

interesting point, never the less... so true...

Yep, nothing like a precious cargo to make you see the folly of selfish, dangerous behavior. ;)

Haha, voice of experience? Being 21, selfish and dangerous are my middle name.

Although, irresponsible isn't. I arrived at my court date early... 1 month early.

Smooth.

Absolutely. Speeding while driving my newborn was selfish and dangerous. It would have been if I didn't have a baby with me. But getting dinged for it made me re-evaluate. I had no problem admitting I was wrong-and then changing my behavior as a result.

I got pulled over very early one morning on my way to work and the cop let me off because he had open heart surgery the year before at my hospital.

I got pullled over in my car pool of myself and 2 nuc med techs. I dug through my bag looking for badge and stuck it on my shirt. I am not a bedside nurse any more so I was in street clothes but it still had the big ugly badge with RN on it you can see from the end of a hall way. The girl in the back said " no way that badge is gonna get you off." Of course it did and the both thought it was wrong but I told them to pull it out and use it. They might save a cop with a PE when he needs a VQ scan at 2 am and they are rushing in to do it stat.

This thread was a real eye-opener.

My little story: I took care of a police chief of a major US city who traveled out-of-state for treatment at my hospital. Before arriving, he contacted the police chief of our city to issue him a bunch of Police Benevolence Association cards. These things are issued in limited numbers to officers to give to their immediate family members. On the surface it looks like a charity membership but in practice they're more like Get Out of Jail Free cards. His wife gave one to every provider he had during his stay (well, the ones they liked). It has the year printed on it and unfortunately or fortunately, I never had a chance to use it.

To make up for that, I did plan on throwing his name around that spring as I used to party in his city every year. I ended up getting drunk and shouting incomprehensibly at bouncers who weren't very impressed.

I was caring for a Stater one night, and his captain had to come in (on duty, they come get the weapon and all). So I'm joking with them about if I get pulled over on the local interstate they better remember who I am! They very seriously told me what to set my cruise control on, I looked at them and exclaimed I never go over 79! They all burst out laughing that I thought 79 on the interstate was speeding.
