GTCC Spring 2016

U.S.A. North Carolina

Hello All,

Just thought I would start this thread because applications are due in a little over a month. Just wanted to know who was applying to the program in the spring. I did a preliminary MAR review, and I think I have around 55 points. I haven't taken the TEAS test yet, which I am dreading because I have barely studied for it. I'm going to try to take it in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully a solid two weeks of studying will be enough. With the points that I have, all I have to do is pass the test. Look forward to hearing from more people.

I completed my application and MAR review back in May for the Spring 2016 ADN program. I was also told that some of the requirements and point system have changed this year, so less points are awarded. Also, yesterday I emailed Tiffany Bryant regarding a question that I had, and I got an automatic response saying that this was her last day at GTCC and to forward any questions to admissions. Does anyone know what is going on with nursing admissions? Hopefully this won't affect the application process.

The only thing they really changed was the classes that would fulfill the HUM/FA requirements. Essentially, the list of classes that they gave are the only one's that would fulfill that requirement. Luckily for me, the woman who did my review gave me the benefit of the doubt. Like you, I did a preliminary MAR review back in May. I gave her a list of classes that I took that fulfilled my FA requirements at Elon. She told me that those classes would be acceptable. I think they changed the requirement a couple of weeks later. To be honest, if they wouldn't have accepted my classes, I would have raised hell. Thankfully, like I said, the woman who did my review was amazing and gave me the benefit of the doubt. I would go there and have a talk with one of the counselors. If it influences your points, at the very least they should have notified you.

From both friends I currently know in the program, they both said the program is very tough. One friend is down to working only one day a week. She said it is very time consuming between classes, clinicals, and studying.

As far as the decline interest in the program. I've been told that people are going to other programs such as Forsyth because of the nursing programs minimum score for passing tests within the program is higher than at Forsyth Tech. I dk how true that is but that's what I've been told.

Also I know from personal experience that a lot of people don't make it through Bio-165 and Bio-166 at GTCC because it's so tough here. This is my second time repeating Bio-165 because I got a high D the first time I took it and only 4 people in my class passed it and we started with at least 50.

Those are very interesting revelations to hear. The trend that I see in past threads is students choosing Forsyth Tech over GTCC. At the end of the day, nursing school is tough in general. I have yet to hear of an easy program. It sucks that its that time consuming though. I have no idea how I'm going to be able to financially support myself if I'm not able to work while in the program. In terms of BIO 165 and 166, I took both at ACC. Both courses were hard but definitely doable if you put the time in. We had some students that dropped, but most passed with B's in the course. Me being one of them. If only 4 students out of 50 passed the class, then I think that says more about the institution than it does the students. My guess is, because they know a lot of their students eventually want to move on to nursing school or similar careers, they make those classes exceptionally hard to weed students out. Thats fine and should be done, but if it is done to the point where less than 10% of your students are passing, then they need to reevaluate things. At this point, I'm expecting this program to be challenging. Its part of the reason I'm taking the semester off now, so I can mentally prepare myself for whats to come. But I also look at it this way, there are a lot of not so bright people in the nursing profession, so obviously nursing school is doable haha.

Yeah, when I went back in May, the lady asked me if I had taken any ACA courses because that could give me two points. I told her that I was registered for and ACA class for the coming summer semester. She told me just to come back or email Tiffany Bryant when I had completed it so that I could get the points. Two months later when I finished the class and emailed Tiffany, she told me that they had changed the requirements and points were no longer awarded for ACA classes at all. I was pretty disappointed since that was the only reason I took the class to begin with.

To the people that took the TEAS already, how was it? I have studied here and there the last few weeks and have been cramming this week. I plan on taking the test on Thurs. I feel like a 62 should be pretty easy to get.

I didn't study much for the teas and rushed to take it and passed it. For me it was just a long test. I feel like it just dragged on and on. I scored highest on the math surprisingly because I'm not a math person. But for that section it was really just about remembering how to do math I haven't done in awhile without a calculator like the rules of fractions for instance. The science I wish I would've studied for more and the grammar I feel like I rushed through because it was last and I was ready to be done with it. But in my opinion the science section was the hardest.

Took the TEAS yesterday and got a 70, so I passed. Unfortunately, they did another MAR review this time a different counselor looked at my transcripts. Frustratingly, the counselor who gave me points for the HUM/FA courses did not have the authority to do that, so instead of having 57 points, I have 53 points. To be honest, I was little disturbed with how this was handled. Initially, my complaints were met with a lot of shortness and defensiveness. Points aside, my biggest worry is am I going to have to take HUM/FA during my first semester of nursing school to fulfill that requirement. The admissions director instructed me that the nursing program may decide to substitute the courses I have taken since I already have a bachelors degree, but I won't know until I get into the program. My advice to everybody is make sure everything is on point with your MAR reviews and don't be surprised if they subtract points at the last minute. Thankfully, as the conversations progressed the admissions director did his best to calm me down. I guess we will see in the next coming weeks how things will turn out.

Unfortunately, responses tend to vary from person to person at GTCC. The first time that I went for a preliminary MAR review, the lady was very short with me and wasn't very much help at all. Thankfully, when I went for my actually review, the woman was very polite and made sure she checked over everything. I am just hoping that the new nursing advisers will be as helpful as Tiffany Bryant, and as prompt with the application process.

Yeah you could tell that there is a lot of stress in that office due to Tiffany's absence. In terms of responding promptly, I was told that letters go out 3 weeks after the application closes, so the last week of September. Its going to be an interesting few weeks haha.

Does anyone have any idea of how many people have applied this semester? Were there any others taking the teas when you guys went last week? I know that last semester they extended the deadline due to a low number of applicants.

The counselor I talked to wouldn't give me the exact number of applicants (they would get in trouble if they did), but he did elude to the fact that there is a full roster, so I don't think they will be extending the deadline this year.
