Group One background checks in Texas

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I have been put into group one, which is a reporting agency that allows other healthcare facilitys to see why I was terminated. I was not given a chance to resign before termination. My question is, can I request to have it changed? Is this a type of discrimination? all this is making me want to get out of healthcare all together, seems like i will allways have a disadvantage being a guy and all.

Your posting gave a lot of information. It is now my understanding that Parkland and Baylor health system are not using Group One. Someone give me additional information if I am wrong please.
Parkland and Baylor use GroupOne. All of the major hospital systems in the Dallas-Fort Worth area use GroupOne during their hiring processes. Most of the nursing programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area use GroupOne to conduct background checks and report information.

I see Group One is still alive & well in Texas.

I've been a traveling nurse for a year now, all California assignments, currently in LA.

My Group one file has 2 black marks, one for quitting a horrible job, and one for not sucking up to a horrible manager, who has since been terminated. Some facilities will allow one black mark, most will not allow 2.

After some time in CA with the staffing ratios here, I'll never work in Texas again, particularly with Group One still in existence. You-all don't realize what a difference unions and a few laws make. And not just for me, for my patients. I've been written up positively by dozens of patients in the last year, including 2 malpractice attorneys and 1 hospital CEO.

Why you all continue to tolerate the kind of treatment you're getting is beyond me, the hospitals are playing on the fact that the RN workforce is largely female & are willing to put up with it.

I'll be staying in LA, hate to sell my home & move, but that's what it's come to, by the way, I'm pulling down near $50/hr and will be hired by my current employer for near that rate.

Go Group One, screwing over nurses one at a time for 2 decades...

I agree with this sentiment. I am originally from California, and I still cannot understand why nurses who live and work in the Southern states are so vehemently anti-union.

So DFW nurses could successfully boycott all facilities that subscribe to Group One. Too many are just not willing to give up their current positions and don't really seem to care about it until it happens to them.

The system is too firmly entrenched, there are NO major employers in the DFW area that do not use Group One.

The ONLY thing that will get rid of Group One is a union that demands that employers no longer use Group One.

The FCRA was never intended to be used in this manner and the sharing of this level of data is illegal in many states, and at best controversial.

I'am not a nurse, but a Registered Respiratory Therapist; on the Group one issue there is a Federal Law that states an employer cannot discriminate against an employee from obtaining future employment. So of course they use credit check in its place. If so many medical employees are being discriminated against why can't we all, nurses, respiratory, radiology, all medical professionals, get together and sue Group One. With all of us putting our money together i bet we could find a very good lawyer out there. If interested e-mail me [email protected] Laws are not meant to be broken. Jeff Robinson Rhome Tx

There are many more hospitals and facilities that use GroupOne, but these places simply do not appear on the client list.

I just heard about this 'Group one'. This is sad and scary. No wonder there is a nurse shortage! Just because a nurse may make one or two employment mistakes does not mean they are a bad nurse. Just FYI it is down here in South East Texas also. If it is not Group One, it is just like it...

Where in SE TX?

I don't know of any hospital in the Houston/Galveston area that is using it.

Everyone keeps saying that it is spreading, yet the only real reports of hospitals using Group One seem to be exclusive to the DFW area.

I WAS ALSO GROUP ONED I CAME TO TEXAS 2 YRS AGO FROM CHICAGO, AND I WISH I NEVER CAME. I WAS PUT ON GROUP ONE 2 TIMES ONCE FOR WORKING IN A PACU WHICH I HAD NEVER DONE BEFORE AS A NURSE. I WAS PUT IN A POSITION OF WORKING WITHOUT MY PRECEPTER BECAUSE THEY FLOATED HER AND I WAS ON MY OWN. THEY KNEW I DIDNT WANT THIS BUT DID IT ANYWAY. I HAD A TERRIBLE TIME THAT DAY, AND AFTER CONSIDERATION THAT NIGHT I DECIDED TO RESIGN MY POSITION. I CAME IN THE NEXT MORNING AND PUT IN MY RESIGNATION. THE MANAGER DIDNT WANT ME TO LEAVE OF COURSE BECAUSE IM A GOOD NURSE BUT I KNEW THIS DEPARTMENT WOULD NOT BE FOR ME OR THE SMALL HOSPITAL. I DIDNT KNOW IT AT THE TIME BUT THE MANAGER PUT ME ON GROUP ONE WRITING IN THAT I GAVE "NO NOTICE" KEEPING IN MIND I WAS ON ORIENTATION. i WAS STILL WITH A PRECEPTER AND I ALWAYS THOUGH ORIENTATION IS TO FIND OUT IF THEY WANT TO KEEP YOU. AND YOU WANT TO KEEP THEM. AND WHY WOULD I GIVE NOTICE IF I WAS ON ORIENTATION DO YOU WHAT ME TO STAY 2 MORE WEEKS PAY ME TO BE PRECEPTED AND THEN I QUIT. IT WAS JUST A WAY FOR THE HOSPITAL TO STICK IT TO ME AFTER I LEFT. BECAUSE THEY KNEW I WASNT HAPPY WITH HOW MY ORIENTATION WENT. I NO TEXAS IS A RIGHT TO WORK STATE WHAT ABOUT MY RIGHTS NOT TO WORK SOMEWHERE I DONT WANT TO WITHOUT IT BEING HELD OVER MY HEAD. I WENT TO ANOTHER HOSITAL I DONT THINK THE HOSITAL GOT THERE COMMENT ON GROUP ONE IN TIME BEFORE I GOT THE OTHER POSTION. AT THAT HOSPITAL I GOT MRSA IN MY EAR AND WAS OFF FOR 2 WEEKS. THAY CALLED ME OVER THE PHONE HR REP AND MY MANAGER AND TOLD ME QUOTE " WE NEED SOMEBODY WHO IS GOING TO BE HERE" I HAD BEEN THERE 3 MONTHS AND HAD NEVER MISSED A DAY TILL THAT POINT I EVEN HAD A DOCTORS NOTE FROM THE ENT DOCTOR BUT THEY TERMINATED ME OVER THE PHONE AND SINCE THIS IS A RIGHT TO WORK STATE IT DIDNT MATTER. I DIDNT REALLY CAR AT THE TIME I WAS MORE WORRIED ABOUT MY HEARING. AND SINCE IM A NURSE I WILL GET ANOTHER JOB WHEN THE INFECTION CLEARS UP. WELL THAT IS WHEN I HEARD ABOUT GROUP ONE. I WENT TO GET ANOTHER JOB AND INTERVIEWED THEY GAVE A OFFER LETTER. AND THEN THEY CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THEY WERE TAKING BACK THERE OFFER BECAUSE OF MY GROUP ONE REPORT. BECAUSE I AM FROM OUT OF STATE I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THEY WERE TAKING ABOUT. I LOOKED UP THIS GROUP ONE BECAUSE I HAVE NO CRIMINAL BACKGROUD AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS. THEY TOLD ME I COULD REQUEST A COPY SO I DID. THE FIRST HOSPITAL STATED THE "NO NOTICE' CRAMP WHICH I MENTIONED EARLIER AND THE SECOND HOSPITAL PUT "EXCESSIVE ABSENTIISM' I CALLED THE GROUP ONE REP ****** OFF THEY WOULD GIVE OUT THIS KIND OF INFORMATION WITH OUT EVEN A QUESTION TO ME. THEY SAID I CAN WRITE A LETTER ASKING IT TO BE REMOVED AND TO INCLUDE MY DOCTORS NOTE WHICH I DID. THE HOSPITALS DIDNT CARE AND DIDNT REMOVED A THING. I AM NOW TOLD I CAN WRITE MY OWN COMMENT DO YOU REALLY THINK A POTENTIAL EMPLOYER CARES WHAT I SAY THEY WILL JUST MOVE ON TO THE NEXT PERSON THANKS FOR LISTENING

As far as I know, GroupOne background screenings are mainly used in the DFW area, although some facilities in the OKC area also use it as a basis for their hiring determinations. I have not yet heard of GroupOne being utilized in healthcare facilities in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, or any other major cities in Texas outside the DFW area.
