Grossmont nursing program, san diego..what should I expect?

U.S.A. California

Hi,

it looks like I will be starting in spring of 09. I have been out of school for a while. How does this program work? Should I start doing some early reading?

So, I guess its not first come first serve anymore.

Why do you say that? As far as I can tell it is still that way. As people drop off the wait gets shorter.

jennifer,

because some people who got on the list way after others are getting in first. I have been waiting since june 06, and still no letter. I know of a few who got on after me and are already in. Seems to be who you know...

if that's the case, i would definitely go into debbie yaddow's office & say something. i know it's happened before & the person went in & raised hell with debbie & now she's in my semester. don't take it lying down. if you know that someone else got in ahead of you, let them know, because you deserve that spot.

Specializes in just about everything.

I graduated from there in August of 1974. It was an LVN program back then. Good luck to you. I loved it.

So...what can I expect from my FIRST semester in the Grossmont program? What classes come first? Fundamantals? Med/Surg?

How many TOTAL days per week of class+clinicals am I looking at (I need to plan my child care and work schedule)

How difficult is it to work a part-time job (12-24 hours per week)?

Specializes in med/surg/tele/neuro/rehab/corrections.

I believe you might be referring to the LVN program at Grossmont Hospital that they used to run? That program has been changed out of there and is now with adult education. It is now at the Grossmont Health Occupations Center in Santee where I graduated from in January of this year, 2008, class 54. :)

As far as I know Grossmont College has always had the ADN RN program. But correct me if I am wrong. ;)

omgosh SDMamma I'm so glad for you that you got in!!! That is wonderful! See it really did work out! You can graduate from a terrific nursing program that has a good reputation. :) I'm just so happy for you! You're going to be a nurse! :heartbeat

Thank you Fairewand! I am pretty stoked about it :) I have been reading some of the other Grossmont forums and some say we have to read 13 chapters by the first week of class. Yikes. I saw my book list for the first semester there are 15 required (not including the extra recommended textbooks), bringing the grand total for books alone to $1018. Double yikes. But as the total cost of the program is just under $3500, I am assuming that some of these books will be used all year???

Specializes in OBGYN, Post Partum.

My first semester at Grossmont was Fundamentals, then med surg/ obgyn/psych second semester. First semester we had 9 hours of lecture and 8 hours of clinical, plus lab time. I was able to work part time pretty easily, as long as your work is willing to work around your school schedule.

Granted things may be different now as my first semester was in 2002. Hope that helps :wink2:

when did you apply to the program?

when did you apply to the program?

I applied in March or April 08. I know my wait wasn't very long when compared to others, but I am VERY grateful to have even been considered. I work for Scripps, and through the Scripps grant program, which I previously mentioned on here, 30 employees per academic year (whether they were on the Grossmont list alrerady or not) can apply for the program. I have 2 coworkers who were not even on the waiting list until this grant came out so technically they waited about 30 days on the list. On the contrary, I have co workers who were chosen after 30+months on the wait list.

But from what I understand, the Scripps candidates have nothing to do with the general waitlist, ie, we don't make your wait any longer because this Grant was designed to provide Grossmont with enough funding to educate an additional 30 nurses per year. So the employees that are chosen come out of an entirely separate pool.
