This week I dealt with something that never crossed my mind I would see...roaches in a child's ears! This kid came in with severe ear pain and all I could see was black in his ears and as I looked closer I could see parts of the roach. He came in a couple weeks ago with clothes and backpack infested with roaches.

Even well-off people with clean houses have cockroaches ;) Not sure this is a CPS issue.

I've had a bug fly into my ear . . .. it felt like a huge bug but turned out to be one of those fruit flies. I didn't like the feeling.

There are some parents out there though . . . . who make me crazy. One kiddo came in smelling unclean and after talking to mom she said he still wet the bed and asked me if I thought they should get a new mattress. :sarcastic:

They'd been letting him sleep in a urine-soaked bed . . . . :banghead:

You can't teach common sense to some people...

Yeah . . .I just took a kiddo to the ER. No details because I want to remain anonymous.

May I say I'm frustrated with these parents?

You see cases like this a lot more than you think.

Here's my story, not of a child and parents, but switch it - a parent (elderly) and her son (caregiver).

My first day in the ER in my last semester, I was taking care of a new admit, the poor woman was in her late 90's and still living on her own with the help of family. She was covered in soot from head to toe and still had curlers in her hair from last week (from what she told us). She was severely malnourished and dehydrated and I had to put a foley in her. When I went to do the procedure...down there...(if you know what I mean), I found creepy crawly things in the form of maggots, along with the lovely odor of necrotic tissue.

The poor woman had a son (supposed caregiver) who seemed to be shocked and appalled by her condition. Made me think what her living conditions were like and if the son ever bothered to check in...

Thank you for responding to my question. I hope I didn't come off as being judgmental :-) When I read about the roaches infesting his clothes and backpack my mind immediately envisioned horrible living conditions. Some of the stories shared are heartbreaking, especially the teen in the ER w/ the student nurse yelling "OMG! Gross!". A nice reminder to remember to temper our reactions to things. Thank you all for taking care of the kids who maybe aren't getting the TLC they need at home :-)

Ugh I remember when I was 12 and my friends 10 year old brother had a June bug flew in his ear. The screams when it started flapping its wings is something I'll always remember.

I worked in an ENT office and you'd be surprised what we suctioned/removed from ears, noses, and throats. Yes, we pulled something with legs out of an ear one time, a green pea from a toddler's nose, and a 2" long chicken bone from someone's throat (the bone had been in some refried beans--that must have been a big bite of beans swallowed in one gulp to not notice that!). These were across age, racial, and socioeconomic boundaries and could happen to anyone. Gross, yes, but more common than people may realize.

I was 10 and I had beans out of my ear, 1 from each year. I have no memories of ever putting them in my ears, probably did it when I was little. Scariest part is the one from the left was already sprouting a little. Ofcourse both beans were dead and dried when they came out. Good thing was that my hearing was better after they came out, no more muffled hearing.
