Grey's Anatomy Premier!!! + How to Contact Show Creators

Published

Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)

The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)

Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."

Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!

I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!

While I agree the first show had problems regarding the negative connotations for the nursing profession, I have been watching the show and to me, it has gotten better. Besides, I watch it for Patrick Dempsey....yum!

I watched it last night - I enjoyed the show.

I am a nurse, but above that I am a woman. I couldn't stand the way one female character was repeatedly sexually harrassed by various men. A supervisor hits on her, a patient kisses her and one of her peers comes up behind her at her locker and puts his arms around her. All of these encounters were pushed on her and she became "angry" in each one, then, oh well, she went on to get assaulted again. How long are we women going to stand by and let this crap get into the mainstream media? The treatment of nurses was indeed offensive, the treatment of women was heinous. How do we reach the producer?

i posted my irritation at this as well a few posts back. It was really inappropriate inmho.

Previews last night showed her eating a meal out on what looked like a date with her harrasser. So, I guess she is giving in to her attraction.

I watched it last night - I enjoyed the show.

I still like it, have to say.

I really liked how, after watching the main character's ex-surgeon mother be completely confused (early-onset Altziemher's) for the past three episodes...the ONE thing that brought her back to reality was the mention of her long-time scrub nurse's name. She just lit up as she said what a great nurse she had been. For those who didn't watch the show, the scrub nurse had advanced pancreatic cancer and had basically been admitted to the hospital to die. She had been there forever and it was like her home, and it's where she chose to spend her last days. She was very well respected.

I watched this show for the first time Sunday night, and really liked it. But yet again, were there ANY nurses on this show??? I'm sure this has been discussed, but I haven't really read through the thread.

Anyway, I still liked the show, regardless. I liked the characters, the music...

the old scrub nurse coming to her "home" hospital to die kinda hit home, too. One of my old house supervisors, who had also worked at our hospital for years and years, had inoperable, and ultimately incurable, cancer, and died there. She was in the hospital for a little while; about 2-3 weeks, before she finally succombed to the disease.

I still like it, have to say.

I really like that too. Especially the hard time she gave the character Sandra Oh plays. Something needs to break through that hard shell. And the continuing story line about the mom with Alzheimers is quite moving and then the correlation with the man with the brain tumor. It was very cool the way the mom turned around at the mention of the scrub nurse's name - she was her old self. But earlier she had no memory of the people in her own photo album.

i agree, that would make a great show. i get tired of the medical programs that portray nurses and doctors as sex hungry animals. i have worked in hospitals for years and heve never found anyone int the linen closet making out.

heh! it happens at my hospital all the time, actually.

--pacu nurse and maintenance guy found making out in surgical suite, after hours.

--icu nurse (male) and resp. therapist (female) found making out in the resp. therapy office.

--step-down unit nurse (male) and another step-down unit nurse (female) found "in the middle of something" in one of the third floor "pods" (mini supply rooms)

*i* wasn't the one who made these discoveries (unfortunately)

*note.. the above is a humorous post!!!*

I found it amusing how that surgeon grabbed Sandra Oh's charactor and sort of shook her after her pt passed away. I'm thinking that doesn't happen too much in real practice. :) Correct me if I'm wrong.

It looked like she was freaking out - we were watching through a window and couldn't hear the conversation. He was probably trying to calm her down.

I've had to take a co-worker's arm and gently lead them away from a situation where they were furious with another co-worker.

I have read through almost all of the postings regarding Gray's Anatomy and I have to say I'm amazed at ya'll flying off the handle like this! This show is about surgical interns not nurses! And the remark in the first episode? For ya'll who work in a place that requires scrubs for anyone giving direct patient care, how many of you have become upset if you're mistaken for an LPN, CNA or respiratory therapist? How about when a patient assumes a male nurse or respiratory therapist is a doctor? It's the pecking order and it is what it is. As for respect, that doesn't automatically come with whatever initials follow your name, respect is earned with your practice. Like the retired scrub nurse in the episode that aired on 4/17, she earned her respect and admiration. Personally I love this show but then after almost 30 years in nursing I no longer have a chip on my shoulder. Why don't ya'll give this show a chance before you flame ABC?

I agree. The second time I watched the show was last Sunday night, and they actually had a veteran nurse as a patient with pancreatic cancer, and she was well recognized, well known, and very well respected by the medical staff. One of the veteran docs who no longer practices, actually said she was the best nurse she had ever worked with. The down side though, was they admitted her to die there. How very sad.:o
