Hi everyone!
I live close to STL area.
I've been a RN for 15 years.
Here's what's going on- I moved here from California, after getting out of the navy- My navy experience was very positive, and I regret leaving military nursing. My civilian nursing experience in California was really bad. I felt nurses were greatly devalued. Called names, pushed, hit, shoved, negitive statements made to the nurses. Most of the time nurses were ignored, and patients suffered because of a lack of nurse importance.
I have found the people here in Missouri to be a great bunch folks. Very nice and positive. Very connected. When someone finds out your a nurse, the reaction is positive.
After my experience in California, I'm having a difficult time moving back into nursing. I like what I do, but I'm not willing to ever expose myself to the kind of abuse that went on the California.
For me nursing is of great importance for society, but no nurse should ever placed in a position of a daily negitive worklife.
What is it like to work in STL area as a RN? Is the nurse valued here?

I am also in the St. Louis area and waiting to start St. Louis Comm. College in the fall. I am 40+ and worry that my age will be a bit of a hindrance, but see from other threads that I probably shouldn't worry. I have considered the Accelerated BSN programs in town, but will need to work while in school and am not sure I can juggle both since they don't recommend working.
Anyone with experience with UMSL or SLU's accelerated programs?
