how long did it take to get it approved? I am presently working in kuwait, finished all my exams and visa screening, applied for a green card in sept-oct 2005, and still awaiting the approval. Can anybody tell me how long does it normally take?

It took us 5 months to get approved. Some people wait only a few weeks. It all depends on????? I think there are a few people in the UK Forum that have been waiting since last year May! There's a thread out there somewhere where people posted how long it took to get approved...give in search "longest wait from Nclex to I140 approval".....and something should come up.

hello,

first of all, i want to congratulate you on your success with obtaining greencard. i am an international student who will finish my bs degree in nursing this spring semester. i have never met anyone with an f1 visa that gets a greencard after graduation. i am so confused about how to do the process. i am hoping that you can help me out. could you please please tell me how you went about doing the paperwork? the second question is: i am currently in new york state and i am wondering if you know any hospital in new york that is willing to help me get the greencard. i heard someone said that some hospitals are only willing to get you the working visa not the greencard. i don't know if this is true, so if you know anything, please clarify. thank you for all your help.

This thread is almost two years old and things have changed considerably with immigration since this thread was started. You are up against several major obstacles at the moment, primarily that there are no visas available for you to adjust your status to.

There are no working visas available for nurses, the only option that you have is the green card but the entire US is under a retrogression and we do not expect things to open up for several years for you to have a petition submitted for the I-485 that you must have to be able to remain in the US and work while waiting for the green card to be processed.

If you qualify for the OPT, that is only going to give you one year of working; if there are no visas available when that is done, you will have to continue on with your studies to be able to maintain your student status and remain in the US.

Please take the time to read the Primer at the top of this forum as well as about the retrogression. Even if you pass the NCLEX-RN exam and find an employer, that will not permit you to remain in the US if there are no visas available. Right now, things may also be delayed for you based on the country where you were born.

thanks very much for the info. so, does that mean i only have one year of OPT, and i have to go back to school? i really don't think i can afford to go to school any longer. i am from Cambodia. i read somewhere that there is a certain number of visa given to each county. i don't think that there are many cambodian students here studing nursing, so does that help a little? do you know any hospital in new york that is willing to help me out with the process? thanks again for all your help.

As Suzanne has explained to you already, there no visas for nurses available at this time. Regardless of were you came from. It may or may not change in 2008. So far your only option is to apply for OPT for one year. Then you need to go back to school to maintain your F-1 status or to change to a different status. Just open google.com and spend some time researching.

P.S. I'm really surprised that so many people who plan to immigrate to the US and attend school here have no clue about current immigration situation, considering the fact that so much information is available through the World Wide Web nowadays.:icon_roll

Your only option when the OPT is completed is to continue on with your schooling as there is no different visa for you to adjust to and be able to remain in the US.

And there are quite a few Cambodian students here in nursing school, as well as other professions, and those are also under the EB-3 category.

We are not expecting the AOS process to open up for several years, the entire world is under the retrogression here and have been since October 31 of 2006. If visas are not current, then there is no adjustment that can be made.

Also be aware that it has been quite difficult for sometime to find a facility in NY that will be willing to start the petitioning process for you, even more so now, when we have no idea of when things will change.

Once you complete your OPT, that is not renewable, and you will not be able to work more than 20 hours per week, if you can get approval to do that while in school. It is not automaticaly done for all right from the beginning of their program in school.
