What Members Are Saying (AI-Generated Summary)

Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

No class specifically, I just know from writing papers in the past it seems to be a painstaking process for me. I'm close to making a decision to attend GCU and am trying to get a feel for the program.

They give you reading assignments so you pull the info from those and Google. It really is difficult to spin your wheels.

Prism - I like your approach. I would like to hear from others who have taken the class before if they handled it the same way. If further questions are needed, I was thinking of the following: Do you have any religious beliefs regarding euthanasia? If it was your family member, what would your choice be?

These were the interview questions 2 of us came up with; How do you feel about people who wish to die, refuse treatment or ask for assistance to die?

Do the reasons they want to die make a difference to your opinion/feeling? (such as because of pain, dignity, cancer, terminal illness, etc.)

How do you feel about withdrawing life support measures from people who did not voice their preference?

Hi derk, the ideas for papers are really carved in stone, not much opportunity for creative writing LOL. The assignment description, combined with the rubric (the specific tool outlining each assignment that the instructor will be grading your paper against) have all the points you're expected to address. In the event you're stuck on finding resources (happened to me only once), the GCU library people are AWESOME :redbeathe. Call them up, tell them what you need to find a resource/reference on, and they will search with you while you're on the phone. :)

Do you ever have trouble coming up with a topic to write about or finding information once you do? Those two things trip me up on a regular basis when writing papers.

Most of the time the assignment guidelines will point you in the right direction and may sometimes offer choices. If you must choose, try to pick something you really want to know about because it makes it easier to write about. Each assignment is given with a rubric (which breaks down the assignment requirements and details into sections with a percentage of the grade for each) the more details your rubric gives, the better I say. You use the rubric to set your paper up, usually most of us end up using each section of the rubric as headings in the paper which also helps to guide your writing.

Finding information: You have an excellent online GCU library at your disposal with librarians that are there to help you. You can call the librarian at a toll free number or chat with them online. The deal is, that you must learn how to search for articles in this library and know how to use it. They have a video tutorial for that.

Most of us here have taken many hours to write each assignment so I would say this is normal. However, you will get very proficient at it and you may get faster at writing papers.

After a while it realized that the best way to write a thesis statement in my introductory paragraph was to include the sections the rubric was requiring and working it into the statement. For example if I had a paper to asking for definitions of primary, secondary and tertiary care I would write, "In the following discussion, primay, secondary and tertiary care will be explored along with...." The instructors loved that because you are giving the reader the intent and direction of the paper. I learned that while in this program at GCU and it has made me a much better writer than I ever was. I feel like I may one day be able to write an article for a journal and I think that is their intent.

Also, using microsoft word is wonderful because if you need a different word for the same meaning you can put the cursor on the word, right click and search for a synonym.

And this helps you form your abstract that is needed for a couple of papers, especially your capstone.
