Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Prism - I agree. The fact that I actually know how to review the studies is what is messing me up. Who knew that knowing too much could be a problem - LOL. My instructor responded that I was already on the right track. I will just use the studies as I would any other resource and follow the assignment guidelines and the rubric. My instructor agreed that the assignment is misleading, since we are not actually reviewing literature.

Well, this just goes to show you how differently each person interprets and implements the rubric points, as well as the instructors! PurpleMyst, as I look at your post above and compare it to the rubric, it makes perfect sense. I didn't think of it that way either, in retrospect I may have blocked out my paper in that fashion (I've learned since then that following the rubric to the letter and using exact language from the assignment description in my paper has gotten me the best results as far as a grade). I also looked back at my paper, vastly different than what PurpleMyst's instructor recommended...

Intro: Definition of Health promotion and thesis statement (btw, I used the actual word "introduction" and bolded it, but didn't get busted?)

Opposite of PM's instructor, I went with ALL secondary headings, flush left and bolded (again, no comment from Instr). They were:

Purpose in Practice (essentially why nurses are the best discipline for health promotion)

Primary Prevention (definition of, how a nurse implements it, and described the article I found to support my paragraph)

Secondary Prevention (same as above)

Tertiary Prevention (same as above)

Evolution of Health Promotion in Nursing (talked about how the role of a nurse has morphed from its roots into health promoter)

Conclusion (centered)

It's no wonder we get confused; now that I see my old paper, other than the incorrect Introduction, I never HAD any primary headings that would then allow for secondary headings. Oh, and I got 100% on the paper. :nuke:

Noodles, I did NOT dissect the 3 studies (as one would in an actual "Literature Review"), I think you may be reading too much into the assignment because you HAVE taken the Research class. The class you are in now is typically class #2, but because you did them out of order, you are applying advanced knowledge that you aren't expected to know yet for this class. I could be wrong, but all I did was find 3 articles (1 for each level of promotion/prevention), and use them as I would any other reference - just to support my points. I think the title of the assignment, "Literature Review", is misleading, kinda sounds like you're expected to analyze and critique the research (thus, providing a REVIEW of the literature). :sstrs:

I'm interested in your Instr's response to your inquiry!

My APA was all over the place until research. The instructor told me to drop the word introduction and to review level 1 and 2 headings. OMG, mine were all over the place. I think they at least give people the benefit of the doubt until mid way? I have no idea. I even had others not in GCU look at my papers and in fact used another paper as a template and guideline from a friend who was very good at APA. Looking back it's almost embarrassing, lol.

LOL And THIS makes perfect sense too (describing the three levels of health promotion for ONE disease process). I didn't think of that either, my PP article was research supporting teaching school-age children, my SP article focused on those interventions appropriate at the stage of earliest detection of serious risk factors, illness or disease (cancer screening for those w/ an identified risk, ASA for cardiac risks, smoking cessation for potential COPD'ers), and my TP article supported prevention of further clinical and physical deterioration while maximizing one's quality of life who is already in the throes of a disease process (example was a spinal cord injury patient). Wow, I was all over the place. Sheesh.

We were told they didn't have to relate, but the instructor said it would make it easier to write about if we did. I think they just want to see if we know what the differences are?

Noodle, you need to clear your inbox:yes:

Sunshine - i just cleared my inbox. Funny thing is that I only had one message in it. What's up with that anyway?

Does anyone remember any of the interview questions that they used in Ethics for the CLC about Euthanasia? I am trying to come up with a set of questions for my group to use so we are all on the same page. The only one that I can come up with is "What are your personal feelings regarding assisted euthanasia?" Brain is fried from making stupid decision to double up on classes and volunteering to be team leader for 3 CLC projects (one for Family and two for Ethics). In 2 weeks I will regain my sanity and it will all be worth it.

Hi Noodles, I'm in this class now. I think your question is spot-on, and nothing more is needed. The actual assignment add-on reads, "Ask all individuals interviewed to share their philosophy and worldview in relation to the ethical dilemma". I'm going with the one question and leaving it at that, because if it gets too involved, I anticipate ending up with waaay too much information to condense. I noticed that the paper requirement is only 750-1,000 words, and in my case there are 5 CLC members, so that boils down to only 250 words each (!!) before we start to run over. And, that has to consider the intro, the group's recommendation for an ethical outcome, and a conclusion. All 4 of the interviews will likely have to be summarized in one (maybe two?) paragraphs in the paper, so I plan on my interview being prettttty slimmmmm.

Haha, my post above is 150 words right there - I can't imagine how we're going to pare down this project, with all the information that's available, to just 250 words per CLC member, to not go over. Yikes.

Prism - I like your approach. I would like to hear from others who have taken the class before if they handled it the same way. If further questions are needed, I was thinking of the following: Do you have any religious beliefs regarding euthanasia? If it was your family member, what would your choice be?

We took the Prism route of thought. Kept is simple and had them go from there. Believe me, you will get enough information, especially when you answer what the syllabus requires.

Speaking of word count. We were probably close to a 1000 words over. There wasn't any way of getting around that.

Do you ever have trouble coming up with a topic to write about or finding information once you do? Those two things trip me up on a regular basis when writing papers.

What class specifically? I usually don't have problems with that. Maybe I could help.

Typically no, because the topic is chosen for you and there is a lot of info out there.
