Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
I don't know, but reading and trying to interpret the first assignment's instructions was like listening to a 5 year old talking without taking a breath, all run on sentences.
Grrrreeeaaaaatttt, another class like this. Can't wait. If I recall, Community Health was the first time I tried to read through all the assignments and could not figure out what the heck they were even asking me to do. I'm happy to do whatever you want me to do, but can you just make it clear so I can be independent enough to get moving on it? I h.a.t.e. asking so many clarifying questions! I remember for CH/PH I got myself so confused that I eventually copy/pasted different parts of assignments with their rubrics and re-pieced them all in different orders on a giant Word doc in different colors corresponding with the weeks, etc., for it to all finally make sense to my brain. Sometimes there are things on the rubric not on the assignment and sometimes things are on the assignment but not on the rubric - Once I moved everything around and could see it laid out in a logical order I finally got it - but it looked like a craft project when I was done!
I want to offer to GCU to to be a volunteer and go through those and rewrite them so they make sense! Please?
Hi there. I am new to ALLNURSES. I am just finishing my statistics class and need advice on what to take next. I have been taking my classes out of order. I needed a class with no CLC due to a really hectic weekend schedule so I took Spirituality after the Professional Dynamics class. Then I took Statistics to get it over with. My next class is Research, but I'm not sure if it might be too early in the program to take it. Also, I need advice on what class to take over Christmas when you get an extra 2 weeks due to the break. I have been told that Community Health might be a good choice for a class with extra time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Yes tokmom, this actually happened to me and several students in my last class -- it was week 4, Sunday night at 2330, hadn't gotten paper #3 back yet and I read someone's panicked QFI to teacher asking that very question. Within 5 minutes there was a reply from Teach saying that she had posted several students' graded assignments earlier in the week but that they didn't seem to be showing so she would resubmit them immediately. Sure enough, couple minutes later we all had our papers back. So, it does happen!
I agree with you here (sounds like I'm replying in the school forum:rolleyes:) I have had to ask at least 2 times that I can remember but when you ask you just do it in a very non threatening manner. I might say "I'm worried that I have not seem any grades and wanted to check with you to make sure that I'm not experiencing technical difficulties with my Loud cloud classroom, can you let me know please?"
tokmom, didn't you say somewhere on here a while back that you had printed those IOM badboys and highlighted all the good stuff? Wanna copy those and sell them on Ebay??!! LOL Nothing wrong with that, they're public info, all we're interested in is the hours saved in finding the pertinent parts that we need to focus on!j/k, of course, the reading is oh-so-much-fun...
Dang it! Should have thought of that! I burned everything today. Yep, took that chance that I really did graduate and into the burn pile they went. Bits and pieces floated down as ash, but I was pretending it was confetti:roflmao:.

GCU doesn't have it already listed for you? I felt like the classes built on each other, so I would think it would be difficult to take classes all willy nilly.

Maybe if you look at the catalog you should be able to see the order the classes usually go in. I had research right after statistics myself.
I would think research after stats makes sense, because stats would still be fresh in your mind. So I'm curious, are you choosing as you go along and there is no built in schedule for you?
What class are you scheduled for (if you are), over xmas break?
I have a built in schedule, but I am choosing to take the classes in the order that suits me best. I took Spirituality after Professional Dynamics because I needed a class with no CLC due to a really heavy personal schedule during that time period. I chose to take Statistics next just to get it over with. Now I am trying to decide which class could benefit most from the extra two weeks we get over Christmas. Ideally I would like to take the class with the heaviest workload during that time period. Right now I have my schedule set to take Community Health over the Christmas break. Also, I need to know if I should take Research immediately following Stats or if it would be better to wait until later because it looks like some of the class applies to the final course.
Hi Noodles, welcome! I, personally, (having just done Stats and Research - in that order), would definitely take Research next. tokmom is right, you will use the Stats stuff in Research, so do it while it's all still fresh in your brain. Plus, the Research class will teach you how to spot quality (vs. not so much) articles - a skill you will need under your belt as you move through the rest of the classes. That eye for articles is necessary so you can do what tokmom did: save worthy articles as you find them, collect them along the way, so when you get to your capstone class you have more than enough to choose from for your capstone project. If you can get thinking of your specific topic now, the Research class gets you started (there's a PICO assignment), so not only will you get that practice, but by the time you get to the Cap you've got your articles. I've been doing it this way (based on tokmom's advice ), and I have good stuff already saved. I do not Not NOT want to be scrambling at the last minute trying to find at least 15 articles.
Hi Prism. Thank you for the good advice. Any thoughts about what class I should take over the Christmas break when we get an extra 2 weeks?

That's better answered by tokmom or JRich or PurpleMyst, as they are nearing the end (yay!) and have most all behind them. I can attest to CH being busy, frankly they're all kind of busy (did I just say "kind of"?? LOL), but here's the thing about the CLC's... and yes, I know there's no way you can know this in advance, but... IF you get into a group that has an absolute control freak and appears to write well in the DQs and posts waaaaay more than the required 6/wk, the CLC can be your friend. (Again, can't believe I just said that). In every single class I was the proofer/editor and general all-around cleaner-upper of crap, and that can RUIN your week. You're assured a good grade, but it's a hellish nightmare to get there. All the while, those other 4-5 team members are out at the zoo with their kids having a lollygagging weekend of freedom. This last class, however, my group included someone who wanted to take the wheel, I trusted her, she wrote well and was allllll over those DQs, so I let go of my controlling nature and didn't say a peep when she wanted to drive the train. What a relief that was, all I had to do was my little part of the PowerPoint, email it to her on Thursday, and I had FOUR DAYS of happydance! If I'm making As on my other 4 personal papers/projects, I'm more willing now to let someone else take on that CLC Lead, because even if it turns out not-so-fab, I've got my other grades to keep me in the game. Plus, these may be isolated incidents, but I've noticed that some of the things in those ppt's that I thought should be marked down on weren't, so I'm not sure the instructors grade as hard on the group projects as I think they should. The reference page on our last one was a literal APA disaster, I sent the Lead my suggestions for corrections, she basically said, "thanks but I'm going with what I have", and submitted it as-is. Not a WORD from the instructor when the grade came back. I was shocked. Got an A and I didn't kill myself in the process. WooHoo!
