Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Probably not the advice you're looking for, but here's mine: Live it, learn it, remember it. Now that I'm in Capstone class, I wish I had paid much more attention in research class. In fact, I find myself going back to that class and reading the material again. Capstone is that research class on steroids. I see many comments in this class from other students at differing levels on the freakout scale, and trust me, with the amount and fast pace of work in the Cap, you seriously don't have time to go back and revisit old stuff. Know your Qual/Quants, systematic reviews, RCTs, etc., what makes for a good study and what doesn't, how to critically appraise them, if the findings are generalizable or transferrable, and on & on & on. I'm not seeing much emphasis on actual statistics in capstone, so that's good at least.

And, if the PICO you choose is something you might actually keep for your Capstone project, start finding articles now, use them for your current assignments for this class, and get instructor feedback on those articles so when you get to Cap you already have some (you need 15 for Cap). And in the next few months keep looking for more and stay in the habit of reading them, dissecting them and appraising them - you'll be waaaaaay ahead of the game for the first two weeks of Capstone.

I really, really appreciate this... I feel like my head is in overload mode these days!

Yeah, here's my slap-forehead moment:

Introduction to Research ---> Capstone: Professional Research Project.

These two go hand in hand, yet the Capstone is research at the professional level and actually developing a project.

DUH, why I didn't put that together sooner is scary. Yep, would've paid more attention... :roflmao:

I can't believe folk taking two classes. I am barely managing one at a time. Getting ready for Into to Research. Geeeezzz why didn't I do this 20 years ago :woot:

Geeeezzz why didn't I do this 20 years ago :woot:

Because 20 years ago they told is an ADN was all we needed! Look at the bright side, 20 year ago we would have had to:

*Drive to/from school QD, sit in a classroom, and do clinicals (eww)

*Spend hours upon hours in the library, hoofing it back and forth to the card catalogue every time we got another bright idea or one book referred us to another

*Lug around those heavy nursing books to/from school and the library

*Suffer through classes that are a whole semester long

*Use typewriters and liquid paper, or rip the whole thing out, crumple it up, and start alllll over

Now, we get to:

*Sit with a computer on the couch in our jammies

*Do school whenever we feel like it (at 0230)

*Read virtual e-books, and I can mark it all up with a pretend highlighter if I want to!

*Get `er done in 5 weeks and move onto the next one

*Copy/paste, auto-format, and all the other wonderful things computers let us do :)

Oh yeah, I think we did the right thing by waiting  No regrets here!

Yes, I much prefer online!! Actually I rarely attended my ADN lectures. Got sick and tired of people asking moronic questions--obvious they had done none of the reading.....Plus our school had just started a hybrid class..they got the lectures online...so a friend gave me her log in information and could watch them at home, lol

Hi all

i am nervous about starting GCU April 20th for RN-BSN online.... The online part is concerning, I am trying to overcome the thought of not turning a page.

Mommao,

Welcome! I also felt the same about the online program. i had taken several online classes prior so I was at least familiar with the format. Take the Introduction class that is offered to new students. i found it very helpful. Also, your books will be available online, but I rent them through Barnes and Noble. They are very reasonably priced so that way I can still "hold" a book and turn the pages which I still prefer to do! Browse through the many pages of this thread as well as the other thread over here
