Grand Canyon University Fall 2016 Hopefuls??

Published

Whew! Took the GCU HESI exam today and did good! What a relief to have this part over with! Now I'm getting excited that nursing school could be a reality in the near future, hopefully fall 2016 (4 months away?) Started the pre req process just about 3 years ago now. Anyone else applying to GCU's fall cohort?? Since the application deadline is May 15th we should find out early to mid June if we were accepted :nailbiting:

I think this was a tough go-around. I was told by my advisor that i would have no problem with my gpa and hesi getting the Trad on campus placement and i was put in fast track. Fall has the most applicants and so its more competitive.

3.45gpa and 88 average hesi

I also have a 3.45 gpa with 85 hesi

So does anyone know how the alternate list works? I want to know if anyone actually gets accepted from the alternate list :/ and when they find out.

I'm not really sure. I was chosen as an alternate for summer as well. It's a little frustrating because that's the whole reason I chose to do my pre-recs at GCU....I figured I wouldn't have to fight as hard.....

So I ended up getting accepted into the summer start about 10 days before it started at the Boswell campus, I really wanted the Scottsdale location because Boswell is 40 minutes away. But I'm extremely grateful that I got in no matter which location. So I will tell you that a lot of the other students were on alternate lists and did end up getting offered a spot. A couple of people I know had been trying for 1-2 years but eventually got in. It's super exciting to be in the program I LOVE it!! Let me know if u have any questions is be happy to answer them :)

I am at Boswell in the Fall and I have a few questions.

When do you get your schedule?

Is the orientation online?

Are clinicals inside the hospital or all over the valley?

How many pairs of scrubs should I get?

Can you tell me if you have any free time at all? I have 4 teenagers and I'm wondering how much time I will have for them. My hubby is very helpful.

Thanks!

I just found out what the whole Tier 1, 2 and 3 meant. My advisor never spoke to me about it and she never would give me any info on anything really. I have taken over 40 credits at GCU but only 18 of them were pre reqs. I was Tier 2 the whole time and got my second choice

I am tier 2 as well. My advisor never told me either, I found out from the gcu handbook! Yeah at this point I'd take any location spot offered to me!

I was freaking out about the schedule because they didn't send it until about 2 days before class began. I hope you get yours sooner than that. I did not go to orientation because I was accepted 10 days before the start date. But I spoke to students who did go and they said it was in person and I believe it was in March for a May summer start. The Boswell campus is across the street from the Banner Boswell hospital. My clinicals start in level 2 so it will be in September/October (about 4 weeks from the start of the level 2 semester) I believe the clinicals can be anywhere, but talking to the level 2's above me it seemed like a lot of them are at Banner Boswell. I heard that clinicals might start from level 1 starting in the fall (a couple of faculty members made that comment) and that they were going to be changing a few things. I bought 2 pairs of scrub pants and 3 scrubs shirts. You have to wear scrubs on lab days which is 2 days a week. You can wear regular clothes on lecture days also 2 days a week. The first 3 weeks were tough and I felt like I had no time. But I'm in week 8 now and I feel like I have a little more time. Most of the time in the beginning was writing papers and then it became more time reading the chapters and studying for tests. I try to read all of the chapters in Health Assessment and Pharmacology I think it's really important and it helps me understand and retain the information, but some students don't always read the chapters and rely more on note taking and skimming. I am mid 30's and have 4 kids (3 teenagers and an 8 year old) my husband is also very helpful and so are my kids so it hasn't been too bad. I look at the change being temporary until I graduate so everyone is able to deal with it. A lot of people say when you decide to go to nursing school the whole family goes with you, and now that I'm here I can say it is very true! Lol! When I really need to focus and read a lot of chapters or write a paper my husband will try to take the kids out of the house for few hours. The Student Nurses association on campus has a mentor program you can sign up for once you begin, so you will be assigned a mentor from the level above you and you can them questions and get guidance. Also for the textbooks I recommend just buying the books they tell you to buy from the "bundle". I decided to buy my books individually from AMAZON and I wish I would have just bought the bundle. It didn't really save me much money and it was a pain. And when you buy the bundle you will get the online version as well. A couple of books don't come in the bundle and those I suggest you buy on AMAZON.

My schedule is Tues 8-4:30 (all lecture Pharm & Nursing Foundations) Wed 1:30-3:30 (Pharm Lab) Thursday 8-4:00 (Health Assessment & Therapeutic Communications) Fri 12-3:00 (health assessment Lab) The lab times vary by group that you are put in, So there is a group that goes in the morning and group in the afternoon. The Pharm lab is only for 8 weeks and then it ends so you will have that day free (but you will probably use it for studying and doing HW). I hope all of this info was helpful, let me know if you want to know anything else. Good luck! Its worth it!

I'm encouraged by your post. I may be in California during orientation so do you feel like you missed anything important?

I have another question. Is it true that you can't wear your wedding ring and you just have to wear a plain band?
