Following...

I have been a nurse for almost a year. The first 6 months I was on a very rough med/surg floor at a well known hospital. I saw new grads not caring about their patients anymore before they even hit one year and I would say 90% of the nurses on that floor left as soon as they got their year because it honestly was that bad. I left at 6 months because I was so fried, burning out and very depressed. I had major life stressors during this time (divorce, suicidal teenager, special needs teenager and two kids flying the coop plus dealing with personal trauma) and the added stress of being a new nurse was making me darn near suicidal. I took a great job at an addiction/rehab and it’s easy. I got a big raise too. It’s boring and now I am wondering what I am doing because there is no challenge in it. I feel useless and directionless. My question is whether working in my current field will still count as experience if I ever want to find a case management or work from home job. It supposedly counts as working in a hopsital with acute care patients but honestly it’s not. Are there jobs with Insuance companies or any work from home jobs for nurses with a psych background? If not I may be looking at another line if work. I’m so disillusioned with nursing and hospital jobs that I don’t think it’s worth my mental health to ever go back.

I thought your GPA was 3.45? Have her check with her supervisor. I have 3.67 and was tier 2. SSA's all give different info!

Yes, it shows from the beginning but I assume it's just a generic listing. I will get my real paper schedule soon in the mail which I hope is more detailed.

@Jmlr I just realized I have my nursing schedule in my GCU app when I look at the classes. It lists my clinical on Thursday from 6am to 6:05am. Does that just mean I will be scheduled for the 12 hour clinical that day? If the it said 6:05pm it would make more sense!

The classes to make you Tier 1 need to be the prereqs so psych minor classes wont count. I have a psych major at GCU and only 2 classes counted. I was Tier 2. If you have C's in your prereqs I would retake that class for a better grade. Your GPA being higher is important too. Have you printed out your Nursing Checklist under the nursing majors tab in your student portal? It's under Academics Those classes listed on there are the ones that count for Tier 1 and toward your GPA. This has been my experience. I know we all get a lot of different info.

Ok. Thanks! I hope with the shorter lectures we will still be getting all of the same info somehow. But a 4 hour lecture? My rear would hurt so much. I still don't have a schedule but the website has all of the new classes listed on it. I think it looks like quite a lot has changed. I was so bummed to find out that Global Health was gone because my class load was going to be so much lighter next summer. Now it's not and there is no week long thanksgiving/spring break in the summer. I'm trying to make the best of it but my kids will be so bored.

Thanks for the update. Is this different because they added the clinical or are you saying the labs and clinicals will be during certain weeks and the lecture will be during another time? I know some schools will do lectures first and then clinicals come later. I did notice that they changed all of the class name and numbers and it actually looks like they added more work in block four.

@surfinandnursing Do not sign up for Global Health issues. I just saw the new nursing schedule and they removed the class. It's unfortunate because I spent a lot of money on it and I thought it would lighten my load in nursing school. I just don't want anyone else to make that mistake.

I took it in the fall. It's your typical class with DQ posts and discussion and lots of papers. I'm taking Nutrition online right now and it's actually harder because that professor grades harder. I would take it now and if you dont get in apply in spring or summer because there are less applicants. Plus, that will make you tier 2, right? I can't remember what you said earlier but i thought you were not on campus at GCU yet.

You have been really positive and encouraging. I have heard so much from nursing students about how its the hardest thing you will ever do and how you will want to quit everyday. I'm hoping that with all of the hard things I have had to overcome in my life and the fact that my family is so supportive will be the difference. You make it sound do-able.

Awesome, you are so helpful. One last question. I took both A&P 201 and 202 last summer and i remember concepts but not every bone and muscle we memorized. Should i spend time reviewing that stuff or my Patho stuff before school starts?

I am so glad to know what's in the lab kit. I'm going to look for those shoes too. This is a lot of great information. Thanks so much. I have a couple more questions. Do they uses tons of powerpoints to teach like in the prereqs or is it a different set up? Do you have to lug those big textbooks to class? Should I start reading my textbooks early to get a headstart?

I have another question. Is it true that you can't wear your wedding ring and you just have to wear a plain band?
