Graduating with $15K in debt and they wont let me sit for boards :(

Nurses Career Support

Published

I graduate in literally 11 days with my Bachelor in Nursing and just found out the worst news that I still owe another school $15,000 and they put a hold on my ability to receive my transcripts, which makes it impossible for me to take the NCLEX until it is paid.

I thought about working as a CNA at the hospital that I want to join the residency program at so that at least I have some kind of foot in the door and that they know me when it comes time for the residency program to accept people again in February or if I should keep my current hotel job until I am able to save up the money and pay the debt off.

Of course the CNA job is more difficult and probably would pay a little less than my hotel job but I really wouldn't mind if that meant me having a better chance at getting into my career in February. I need some advice please and thank you! :)

Wait a minute. How can a school charge you tuition when you aren't taking classes there? Sounds pretty messed up.

Something smells rotten in Denmark. Certainly not the tulips!

Yeah i know it all sounds confusing. It confused me as well when i found out. I cant explain all of the situation without giving away my schools name but ill try.

The school that i am receiving my BSN (school A) and the school i owe money to (school B) are sister schools. i went to school B only for my pre-reqs and havent been enrolled in there since freshman yr and my bill was payed off. When i started going to school A, i didnt know that school B was still charging me tuition every year for attending school A because school A was also charging me tuition. So every year they charged me tuition and added interest on top of that and didnt tell me!

When i looked at my account for school A, it says that school B has a hold on my transcripts for owing them money. Had no clue since i havent logged into my account for school B since freshman year.

That doesn't make sense. If this is legit, it's up to your current school to get this cleared up.

First of all, your current school accepted the transfer credits so they've already acknowledged that you've earned them.

Secondly, if they're "sister schools", your current school can contact the other one and have those charges expunged.

So essentially you have been charged double for classes at school A bc school B is also charging you? This doesn't make sense.

People seem confused about the sister school part so I just want to clear that up. (I'm pretty sure I understand because some of the smaller schools do something similar around here.)

Basically two colleges will have a network set up to graduate BSN students because they don't have the faculty and or buildings to actually their own BSN program. So basically you would take your pre-reqs at school A and then once you're done with your pre-reqs you would then starts you nursing courses at school B as they have the faculty and space to run the rest of the program. If I remember correctly some school also use it to offset costs. So it is actually possible that school A could still be charging her as they might have missed the fact that she started at school B (These are typically two entirely different colleges who just work together on the program)

But still? How are you being charged for classes you aren't taking? What exactly is the other school billing you 15k for?

But, still, even if the first school doesn't realize OP moved on to the second school, how can they keep charging her tuition? I mean, doesn't she need to register for classes? At every school I've ever attended, it's been my responsibility to register each semester. How can they charge a student who is not enrolled in any of their classes?
