how does the grading system work at your college?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all,

I just wanted to know if the grading system at my college is "standard" or if they differ from school to school. Grades are based on a 10 point scale, eg. 100-90 is an A, 89-80 is a B, etc. When the professors report the grade to the college to calculate GPA, they only report the letter grade, not the number grade. So the GPA is calculated as 4.0 for A, 3.0 for B, etc. Is this normal? It's kind of frustrating to me because if I get an 89.9 in a class, it will be a 3.0... the same if I had gotten an 80.... so do all schools report this way?

Community college I am at does the same grading scale for MOST clases....the 100-90=A, 89-80 =B and so on but SOME classes, such as allied health, so the medical terminoligy class I am taking, as well as DIT nutrition class I took, go by a 100-92=A, 91-85=B, 84-75=C, 74-65=D. I think my nursing school also goes by this scale. Though the A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0 does still apply

Thanks guys! Now I realize that the opportunity to get a 4.0 from grades 100-90 is pretty good, especially since that is what I want -- all A's! I got a couple of high B's in 2007 that are weighing down my GPA though, frusterating, esp since in 2007 I didn't know what I was really doing with my life and I didn't know I'd be trying to get into such a competitive program. :( I wish they'd only calculate GPA from the time you start your nursing pre-reqs :)

Our schools pre-req grading scale is just A, B, C, D, and F. I wish we had the opportunity to receive +'s and -'s but we don't.

100-90 = A

89-80 = B

79-70 = C

69-60 = D

59 and below = F

When we get into the nursing program its a whole different ballgame though.

100-93 = A

92-85 = B

84-75 = C

74 and below = F

A 4.00 93-100

A- 3.67, 91-92

B+ 3.33 89-90

B 3.00 85-88

B- 2.67 83-84

C+ 2.33 80-82

C 2.00 75-79

Below a 75 is failing.

I like this scale. It seems more 'student' friendly. :)

yeah! I like that scale too! That's what I want -- credit for the "plus" :)

It IS student friendly! I figured out that this was the grading scale for

the nursing classes too! Isn't that nice? My nursing advisor said that statistics have

shown that C+ nurses pass their boards so thats why the grading is a bit more lenient.

Anything lower than a 75% in the nursing courses is a fail though and each nursing course

is only offered once a year. That sucks.

The grading scale for my school is

A= 100-93

B= 92-85

C= 84-77

D= 76-70

We also have to get an average of 77 on the exams.

The real question is how the admitting schools compare GPA's from a school with a +/- system and one w/o. I am not sure it balances out. Nor am I sure who has the advantage (not counting rutguers and one posters school that had a 20 point range for a 4.0, but that does bring up a good point as well, how are those schools compaired to the others).

As for the 89.9, it never hurts to ask the professor if they can make a rounding error. I have not done this myself (my grades are too important to me to allow them to depend on the good graces of anyone) but I see other students ask often, and usually as long as the student was active in class, always on time and never absent the professor is happy to help out. This won't take you from a c to an a, or even an 87.9 to a 90, but is worth a shot if you are within 2% and are a pleasure to have in class.

I just found out what the grading system for the B+ and B's were for Rutgers University.

90-100% A

85-89% B+

80-84% B

75-79% C+

Anything lower than 74%= Fail.
