GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls

Published

Hi everyone! Just putting feelers out to see who is planning to apply to GPC for next Fall. I am taking my last pre-req, A&P II, this semester at GPC (well, almost last, still have to do that one credit Research class), and pondering when to take the TEAS. Before this semester I was out of school for a couple of years, and had kind of deferred my desire to attend nursing school. But it kept calling me, and I realized I HAVE to go for this now before my Science pre-reqs expire. GPC is actually the only school I've been able to find so far that lists them as good for six years as opposed to the usual five.

I'll be honest, I think I have a chance, but I also think it's a long shot. A lot is riding on how well I do on my TEAS, and getting an A in this class. In the beginning I was feeling very low about my chances, but recently my mindset has shifted, and I am feeling that hunger and drive to be accepted to nursing school. I definitely don't lack the brains, but I'm in recovery, so I have a spotty academic record. If I make an A in this class I will have a 3.0 in my Science pre-reqs and a 3.6 GPA for all the pre-reqs combined.

I also have concerns about my background check, as there are a few things on there, the most serious of which is very old - 16 years. So . . . one part of me knows that I have to cultivate an attitude of "whatever it takes" to get in. Retaking classes, applying for LPN as well, whatever I have to do.

It's pretty daunting to feel so simultaneously hopeful and excited about having a chance, and dwelling on the negative factors and seriously big mistakes that may kill my chances.

I'm really having to take it one step at a time. And every time I see someone in the cafeteria wearing the student nurses uniform I just think about how much I want to be wearing that uniform myself. It's something I really need for my life, my self-esteem, my family, to pursure this successfully. So that's me.

Where are you all in your journey? What are your concerns, struggles, hopes, and mindset? I look very forward to hearing from others. Even though we're competing against each other, we're still in it together and I think support is so valuable.

Tell me your story!

HAHAHAHA! U sound exactly like me! The anticipation is ridiculous.

I did just ok on the teas. Got 74 but have 4.0 in the science courses and 3.81 in the general electives. Currently taking micro and it doesn't seem to be half as involved as anatomy was. Well not yet anyway.

I literally have the exact same rofl. Except I took Micro last summer. That was horrible! The downside about GPC is I would still have four more classes to complete. They are nothing I can't tackle but it's just an extra load.

Oh my. What classes would U have left for GPC? Research, Phed and what else? Wow so ironic we have same scores lol I live 5 minutes away from gwinnett tech but they only accept I think 60 students. That was discouraging for me so I didn't even apply. This year GPC will accept 150 so that's a good thing :) I'll be glad when micro is over. I cannot imagine taking that course in the summer! Good for u!

At GTC you have to have all sciences, psychology, algebra, and English 1101 finished prior to applying. Which is a good thing because that pretty much puts everyone at a fair level vs only having one science, math, and whatever done.

But yeah, the downside is the small # of students accepted. Getting in is sure going to be tough.

Those, history, and some other course I cant put my mind on at the moment.

Yea that was another reason lol I surely didn't have them all completed. Still had micro to do. I'm sure you will have your pick of the two schools. When does Gwinnett tech notify you if u got in?

Taking history now online and I love it! Those two one credit classes are super super easy. You'll be fine if it came down to having to take them.

At gpc first semester you are in class 2 days a week and clinicals usually every other week 2 days a week. But you also have skill lab that you have to account for. Good luck. Enjoy your pre nursing school life. I miss it. And keep in mind this is how it has been for the past few semesters. They may change it for you.

Hi Everyone.. Check your GPC email. I received an email letting me know that they are considering my application. And they advised that they would like to all general edu courses completed prior to starting the program. I have COM 1201 to take. So I think I will take it online in the summer. They said that letters will be sent prior to april 30th.

Yes I received an email this morning :) great sign! I will be taking speech this summer online. It will be my last class to take.

I got the e-mail as well :) I will be lacking the research class as of this summer.

I got it as well, however it says that it's recommended to have them completed not required?

It mentions this:

You cannot have more than six (6) general education requirements outstanding to start the nursing program.

Do they mean credit hours or classes?

This is my outstanding:

POLS 1101, RSCH 1203, HIST 211, PHED 1101

I wonder how I should tackle this....

So basically you can start the nursing program and have two gen elective classes remaining to finish at some point before graduation.
