GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls

Published

Hi everyone! Just putting feelers out to see who is planning to apply to GPC for next Fall. I am taking my last pre-req, A&P II, this semester at GPC (well, almost last, still have to do that one credit Research class), and pondering when to take the TEAS. Before this semester I was out of school for a couple of years, and had kind of deferred my desire to attend nursing school. But it kept calling me, and I realized I HAVE to go for this now before my Science pre-reqs expire. GPC is actually the only school I've been able to find so far that lists them as good for six years as opposed to the usual five.

I'll be honest, I think I have a chance, but I also think it's a long shot. A lot is riding on how well I do on my TEAS, and getting an A in this class. In the beginning I was feeling very low about my chances, but recently my mindset has shifted, and I am feeling that hunger and drive to be accepted to nursing school. I definitely don't lack the brains, but I'm in recovery, so I have a spotty academic record. If I make an A in this class I will have a 3.0 in my Science pre-reqs and a 3.6 GPA for all the pre-reqs combined.

I also have concerns about my background check, as there are a few things on there, the most serious of which is very old - 16 years. So . . . one part of me knows that I have to cultivate an attitude of "whatever it takes" to get in. Retaking classes, applying for LPN as well, whatever I have to do.

It's pretty daunting to feel so simultaneously hopeful and excited about having a chance, and dwelling on the negative factors and seriously big mistakes that may kill my chances.

I'm really having to take it one step at a time. And every time I see someone in the cafeteria wearing the student nurses uniform I just think about how much I want to be wearing that uniform myself. It's something I really need for my life, my self-esteem, my family, to pursure this successfully. So that's me.

Where are you all in your journey? What are your concerns, struggles, hopes, and mindset? I look very forward to hearing from others. Even though we're competing against each other, we're still in it together and I think support is so valuable.

Tell me your story!

Hello there!

Thanks for starting this thread. I will be applying to GPC's nursing program as well as Clayton State. I'm currently taking A&P2 at dunwoody along with English 2. I plan to take the teas early January to allow a month to study after this semester is over with. I'm NERVOUS about the teas as I'm not a good test taker at all. I had to retake all my sciences as they were 10 years old. I got into a nursing program 10 years ago and withdrew after two weeks due to a family emergency and had to put my dream aside for a long while. So now here I am 10+ years later with a hubby and two young boys in tow :) My first choice is GPC. A good friend graduated from their program and highly recommended it. It's 20 minutes from home and a lot cheaper than most schools. When do you plan to take the teas? My GPA is 4.0 thus far in sciences. For the other prerequisite classes I have all A's except math I received a B. I wish you all the best in this journey.we need all the support we can get!!

Thanks, for your reply! I'm nervous about the TEAS too, it sounds like we really need to watch it with time! Double-check me, but I could not find any January test dates on ATI's website even as far as Dahlonega. I was also hopinng to wait until the semester was over. One thing she said in the nursing info session that was very helpful was that if we're taking the TEAS close to GPC's deadline was to make sure it was the computerized version, not the pencil and paper - those test results take longer. I'll bet you will get in with that beautiful GPA! That's awesome that you did not give up on your nursing dream - sometimes life just happens and we have to wait a while.

Thanks so much. I've got a lot riding on the teas tho. I got to get it right the first attempt and I haven't touched math in YEARS so I'm worried but hopeful and remaining positive. Mercer is paper and pencil and takes around 3 days to find out your results. I have two friends that took it there so as long as u don't wait until the last week in January I don't see that being an issue. Mercer seems to have all their dates the first week of every month from looking at the schedule so fingers crossed the same will happen in January. Did she say if u needed to wait a specific timeframe between attempts? Bc I'm thinking if we take it beg of jan and aren't happy w results we could go following week for a retake if school doesn't have a waiting period between attempts. If she didn't mention at session I'll have to email and find out. Always good to know just in case ;). I say u apply and pray. What do u have to lose? Someone is going to give u a chance it's just a matter of finding out who.

Hi ladies I too am applying to GPC for Fall 2014... I just moved to the area and trying to get as much info as possible. So I'm not sure if I can retake A&P in the spring or I have to sign up for Chem.. Someone please help me if they know....... I'm really looking to start next fall like I said all my pre Reqs are done. Just trying to get A&P taken over...

Ok just reading this. Disregard my email to you lol you can apply to nursing program if your sciences are less than 6 years old. Only thing u must have done is take the teas V test. So by jan 31st u have to be admitted to gpc and have teas V complete and apply to program. Then retake the a&p 1 if u want in the spring while u wait. That's only if u want but not mandatory. Chemistry is a prereq IF u are starting at gpc but since u have your sciences it's not a prereq.

At GPC they have to be no more than six years old. If you took them in 2008 or later you are o.k, is what she told us in the info session last week. But from all the schools in the area I've looked at (and I haven't looked at private in-depth because I can't afford that), GPC is the only one that has a six instead of five year limit.

I'm pretty sure there is a time limit between retakes. We just need to get that study time in to do well the first time - which we can, if we take it in January! Are you using a study guide?

You are absolutely right. Thanks for that. I needed to hear it :) I purchased the ati study guide and will be using that primarily. I'll breathe easy when I start seeing dates for January posted lol always something to stress over. Ugh.

Sure, I need to tell it to myself, too! Same here, using the ATI guide. Always something is right . . .
