GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls
Sure, I need to tell it to myself, too! Same here, using the ATI guide. Always something is right . . .

GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls
I'm pretty sure there is a time limit between retakes. We just need to get that study time in to do well the first time - which we can, if we take it in January! Are you using a study guide?

GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls
At GPC they have to be no more than six years old. If you took them in 2008 or later you are o.k, is what she told us in the info session last week. But from all the schools in the area I've looked at (and I haven't looked at private in-depth because I can't afford that), GPC is the only one that has a six instead of five year limit.

GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls
Thanks, for your reply! I'm nervous about the TEAS too, it sounds like we really need to watch it with time! Double-check me, but I could not find any January test dates on ATI's website even as far as Dahlonega. I was also hopinng to wait until the semester was over. One thing she said in the nursing info session that was very helpful was that if we're taking the TEAS close to GPC's deadline was to make sure it was the computerized version, not the pencil and paper - those test results take longer. I'll bet you will get in with that beautiful GPA! That's awesome that you did not give up on your nursing dream - sometimes life just happens and we have to wait a while.

Clinicals at CHOA with something on your background?
Thanks for the tip! I will look up (moderator edit of name). Is she one of the instructors? She said for the TEAS the minimum requirement is a 63 for your total adjusted score, a 63 in Math, and a 63 in Reading. She said they don't look at Science by itself, and that's usually the one students get the lowest score on. She also said to be competitive you need to get 65 on the Total adjusted, Reading and Math. It was very helpful to go to it - there are quite a few more coming up. Good luck to you! When are you planning to take the TEAS? I'm trying to decide when to take it, myself. I would really like to wait until the semester's over so I can focus on studying only for that, but there aren't any test dates listed for mid-December or January.

Clinicals at CHOA with something on your background?
Hi everyone, I attended my second nursing info. session today for GPC, whose ADN program I will be applying to. We were told you may be cleared for clinicals at all the other hospitals, but when you get to CHOA you may be red-flagged. Has anyone been able to do clinicals there with something on your background check? Are they looking for a crystal clear background? This is worrisome to me, because that's a lot of work and money if I get to the last semester and can't complete Peds. I have nothing violent of any kind on there, nothing involving children, but there are some old things on my record. Thanks for any input!

GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls
Hi everyone! Just putting feelers out to see who is planning to apply to GPC for next Fall. I am taking my last pre-req, A&P II, this semester at GPC (well, almost last, still have to do that one credit Research class), and pondering when to take the TEAS. Before this semester I was out of school for a couple of years, and had kind of deferred my desire to attend nursing school. But it kept calling me, and I realized I HAVE to go for this now before my Science pre-reqs expire. GPC is actually the only school I've been able to find so far that lists them as good for six years as opposed to the usual five. I'll be honest, I think I have a chance, but I also think it's a long shot. A lot is riding on how well I do on my TEAS, and getting an A in this class. In the beginning I was feeling very low about my chances, but recently my mindset has shifted, and I am feeling that hunger and drive to be accepted to nursing school. I definitely don't lack the brains, but I'm in recovery, so I have a spotty academic record. If I make an A in this class I will have a 3.0 in my Science pre-reqs and a 3.6 GPA for all the pre-reqs combined. I also have concerns about my background check, as there are a few things on there, the most serious of which is very old - 16 years. So . . . one part of me knows that I have to cultivate an attitude of "whatever it takes" to get in. Retaking classes, applying for LPN as well, whatever I have to do. It's pretty daunting to feel so simultaneously hopeful and excited about having a chance, and dwelling on the negative factors and seriously big mistakes that may kill my chances. I'm really having to take it one step at a time. And every time I see someone in the cafeteria wearing the student nurses uniform I just think about how much I want to be wearing that uniform myself. It's something I really need for my life, my self-esteem, my family, to pursure this successfully. So that's me. Where are you all in your journey? What are your concerns, struggles, hopes, and mindset? I look very forward to hearing from others. Even though we're competing against each other, we're still in it together and I think support is so valuable. Tell me your story!

Have you ever been convicted of a felony?
Sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest thing to do. I think it's clear from reading this board that honesty is always the best policy with the BON.

Will First Offender keep me out of nursing?
kaydensmom01 - Thank you, thank you, thank you! For your honesty and truly helpful advice! But most of all, for saying that you knew if you didn't at least try, you wouldn't be happy. At the end of the day, I think that is where I am at, too. I know if I don't' succeed it will be crushing, but I also know that I would always regret not trying. I really believe that sometimes all we can do is the footwork; put the effort in, do our best, and then - trust that a way will be found, that the right people along the way will be there to help us out, that we will be able to become nurses if that is what is right for us and our place in the world. Can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Will First Offender keep me out of nursing?
Thanks, but - if I could afford an attorney, I would have no need to post this question! As I stated in my post, I am hoping for feedback from others who were in the same boat, so - seeking what others experiences may have been. I'm aware that state laws differ, and am also aware that no one on this board is giving me what would be considered legal advice, just experiences and opinions.

Reinstated!!
That's wonderful! You will find a job - you know what they say, just do the right thing, and the rest will follow. And it will : )

Will First Offender keep me out of nursing?
Thank you both! Unfortunately First Offender is exempt from expungement.

Will First Offender keep me out of nursing?
Hi everyone! I have used this board endlessly for help, and you guys have been an amazing resource! I know a LOT of legal questions get asked on here, and we are supposed to check with our local board of nursing (I have scoured their website thus far), but I am really hoping to hear from someone who had/has a similar situation to me, and would be grateful for any thoughts you may have. I only need to complete A&P II and take the TEAS to be eligible to apply to local ADN programs. However, I am concerned about my background check. I have been in recovery a long time, but did have a felony charge (the charge is not drug or alcohol related, but was a result of my use). It is not a charge that involves violence, or a sex offense. I pled guilty (I was) under First Offender, and am technically not considered convicted of a felony because of that, though it was a felony charge. I know the BON lists "moral turpitude" as a possible disqualifier for licensure, however, this seems to be a grey area. I completed my probation, and have only one other thing on my record since then, which I am not worried about (traffic related). This was fifteen years ago. SO . . . what do you all think? I am about to put in a lot of hard work, sweat, time away from family, etc. for A&P and TEAS studying, and am hoping and praying it will be worth it in the end. Thank you for reading this long post, and TIA for all experiences you have to share. I also have contacts in local hospitals (RN's) and from local families that can all state I have worked professionally, compassionately, and competently with them over the past six years or so, and can provide letters of reference. I am hoping this will help!
