Hi, I was wondering if anyone could explain the process of signing up for the Army Nurse Corps. Just some background about me, I currently have 2 bachelors degree in addition to my BSN and I have 1 year of ICU experience.

My understanding for signing up is: Speaking to recruiter, fill out an application, wait for it to go through, wait multiple months to get an assignment, go to BOLC, go to assignment.

So again, can someone explain this process to me in more depth and fill in any gaps I am missing. Thanks.

Specializes in Adult Critical Care.

There is also an extensive in-person medical physical at MEPS. Pretty much you can't have any medical condition requiring daily meds without applying for a waiver.

Further, there is a chief nurse interview. There may also be a specialty interview with an experienced ICU nurse, given that you'll be applying as a fully-qualified ICU nurse.

The process for most people from talking to a recruiter to showing up at officer basic training takes nearly a year.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Jfratian is correct, except the Army doesn't do a chief nurse interview. It's a long process and very competitive. Get your CCRN to be competitive, and your BSN GPA is also considered.

I'm going to respond to this as I am currently in AMEDD BOLC. So after talking to your recruiter they will start a packet. During completing this packet you will go to MEPS for medical clearance. Once this packet and MEPS is complete your packet will be submitted to a board which reviews in October. I was selected for my AOC 66T and was told they were only excepting 4 for fiscal year 2018. How true this is I dont know. I found out in November that I was selected. I didn't get my scroll until March and then commissioned in April. After commissioning I received my unofficial orders via email in late may. A week later I received my official orders. My orders were to PCS before all training was to begin to Ft Sam Houston. Most will not PCS before their training. Training is broken up into 2 separate programs. The first is called DCC and done at Ft.Sill. The Second is BOLC conducted here at Ft. Sam Houston. All together it is roughly 14 weeks. There is a lot that recruiters will not tell you mostly bc they have no clue and this can make the process very daunting so if you ever need info I'm more than happy to help.

I'd like to make your acquaintance particularly if you have any how it works for reservists. Good luck with BOLC! I I'm hoping to make the October board as the only 66R but may be held up by a medical waiver.

It's great hearing about someone else's process since I can use that to get a general idea of how mine will go. My case is pretty similar to Ftr66T2018's.

Here's a timeline of what mine was like:

Jan 2018 - Spoke with AMEDD recruiter and we built my packet

Feb (late) - recruiter submitted scroll

March (mid) - board met

March (late) - selected

July (mid) - scroll came back

July (late) - signed my contract for AD 66H

Current - waiting

Right now, my packet is sitting at HRC and I'm just waiting for the assignment officer to contact me so s/he can give me more information... At least, that's what my recruiter said is suppose to happen. I'm also waiting for DCC/BOLC/PCS orders.

They'll probably make you take the OPAT when you go to MEPS so just familiarize yourself with it. I'm not sure if it's a pass or fail but it puts you in one of four categories based on your physical performance. I didn't have to take it since I am already in the service, but I believe the tests included: deadlift, seated power throw, standing long jump and the beep test.

As far as the paperwork, they rush you to get them turned in, only to make you wait. My board was in mid March when my recruiter contacted me late January, so I had to get him all the papers ready by the end of February. There is that big board in October, but people are probably finishing up their packets now. Hopefully you can make it if you decide to apply, but there's so many paperwork involved. I was pretty much working non-stop to get things to my recruiter (official transcripts, license, background checks, army forms, etc). I think the worse part is the wait for scroll approval. It needs to be sent up to the Secretary of Defense to get approved and that can take 3-6 months. Although some lucky ones get it faster and some unlucky ones get it much later. Not sure how much different it is for someone applying for reserves. I did read that they have to complete an online portion before going to BOLC. There's some good older threads with some more info, but you'd probably have to dig a little bit to find them.

Good luck on your application process and I hope things go well for you.
