I want to apply for a job on USAJOBS, but was wondering if anyone could give me some resume tips..if you have been hired in to a GS position. The whole process is pretty daunting. PM me please. I am a mil spouse really hoping to get a job in Europe!

Also, The recruiter that I have spoken with is very vague and is basically telling me to wait until July to contact them. That's not in my blood, waiting. Where can I find a list of what documents I need to be compiling?

The process for a job on USAjobs can be very frustrating so learn some sort of relaxation technique lol, that is the first piece of advice I will give you. So the first thing that you want to do is check the eligible applicants for the job. Some position are internal and are not hiring from the public. Next you want to format your resume. I believe there is a resume builder on their website that you can utilize. Next you want to make sure that you have ALL the required paperwork that they request. If you leave one thing out the system will not even consider you. You will need to apply for the position, submit all the required paperwork by uploading it on their website, and complete whatever questionnaire that goes along with the application.

If you are doing anything with the military or government, you will have to learn patience — waiting is the name of the game!

Just make sure your resume speaks to the key words in the job announcements. That will get you through the first step in acquiring a GS job: being declared qualified for the position. After that, your resume is passed to the hiring authority and they determine if they want to interview you. If so, they will contact you. Good luck!

I think each position on that website tells you what documents they want. DD214, resume, etc.

The best piece of advice I was given was to use the key words in the job announcement on usajobs and make sure it was in your resume. I went to the military and family readiness center and consulted an individual there who helped people with federal resumes. Another way to get a job is through a contracting company. Ask on spouses pages or ask around in the clinic/hospital who the contracting company is and send your resume even if there aren't current openings. I got an email a year later asking if I could work. If the jobs where younger going are few, make sure to do volunteer work such as the red cross, or hospital/clinic. A lot of times that is how you hear about jobs. Good luck to you!

OPM requires a specific format for your resume, here's an example of how to list a job on your resume:

Re: any form and documents you'll need. That SHOULD be listed in the job posting, but if it isn't a HR contact should be listed in the job posting, contact them and ask them to send you a list of required documents.

I finished this process about a year ago and it took over a year to get through it, very frustrating. I ended up putting my two weeks notice in and quitting because they misrepresented many things and some of them were deal breakers. I was extremely upset over about wasting my time and energy. I would suggest to get everything they promise in writing and have them be VERY specific and watch how they word things. Leave no room for ambiguity.

Ah, gotcha. I had a VA offer in the past that I turned down, but I was a GS nurse in an Army ER after I left active duty. I have been a patient in a VA ER once, nice staff but the facility was very.... government. Lol
