Government classifies nurses as 'unskilled workers'

Published

I could not believe my ears the other night on the news. Evidently, our government has placed nurses in the 'unskilled' category for visas to bring in cheaper, less-educated nurses from other countries.

What a slap in the face. :nono::nono::nono::nono:

". . . According to the State Department, the biggest of these programs is the H visa program. More than 300,000 H visas, in fact, were issued last year, including H-1B visas that allow American companies to replace American workers with cheaper paid foreigners. H visas are also used for nurses, farm workers and other so-called unskilled workers, if you can call a nurse unskilled... . "

You are all still doing a great job;)

Thanks to FinNurse for her inspirational thought about the nursing profession. The commentator who termed nursing as 'unskilled will rue the day he/she did. I left lecturing in law to become a nurse because I wanted to acquire the skills taught on the courses offered to nurses. Believe me, law as a principle pale into insignificance in the face of humanity's morbidity and mortality. Nurses - rise to the challenge!

Roy was just being facetious (teasing)! Point is, of course, that since they DO have to pass our national licensing exam AND have to have a professional license issued by the State in which they plan to work, the idea of foreign nurses being "unskilled" is beyond ridiculous.

As is the idea of them being less educated when you consider most of them are coming here with their BSNs...

I believe foreign nurses, other than from Canada, require a greencard. The H visas haven't been allowed for a few years as far as nurses were concerned.

So what are we going to do about this effrontery? (Is that the right word for "insult"?)

First I'd like to know if nurses actually are being granted these visas. If they aren't, then the government hasn't classified them as unskilled at all and we might be making ourselves angry over something that hasn't happened.

As is the idea of them being less educated when you consider most of them are coming here with their BSNs...

But most American Nurses only have either a Diploma in Nursing, or a two year Associates Degree, while LPN/LVNs, have one year of post high school education. PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSISTANTS HAVE AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE as entry into practice.

Does anyone connect the dots yet? I would think that this is where the idea comes from. Folks, we have brought this on ourselves. Think out side the box.

Driving a truck requires training but they are considered unskilled also.

I just wonder what constitutes the term "skilled"?

thats not fair to say to all the foreign educated nurses out there, we have to take the same test (NCLEX) that u do and we go thru more test so its not fair to put foreign educated grads down.. i do agree that it is ignorant to call US trained nurses unskilled but thats the governments problem.. not foreign nurses.. thats just my opinion :)
