  1. Thanks Madwife 2002 'n all, I drove to Wythenshaw's hospital's North West lung Centre on Friday for a portable nebulizer for my community patient. Couldn't get one for love nor money from the District Nurses in the area I work. And I missed the Canada Expo held in Leeds today. I didn't think it was the right time for me to be thinking about it, with my kids taking exams 'n all. Maybe in a year or two. Meanwhile, I'm still applying for jobs (community I think, I've sacked the idea of doing yet another degree - OT!) Caraibrit
  2. Hi All, Well, I 've just missed a Canada Expo today (to be held at the Leeds Armouries museum). Paid my GDP15.00, but decided that my kids still need me (17 and 15). They're taking exams now and my eldest daughter is just beginning to start up her architectural practice. I have three interviews for community nursing and 1 for learning and development officer in immunisation, I felt I needed more experience before applying (qualified in 2007 but only have about a year's solid nursing experience due to not getting through interviews). Money is my problem. I cannot seem to acquire enough to pay all my bills and save enough for Canada. I felt I should start and save and maybe by the time my youngest is ready for college, I can look at things again. At the minute, I'm working for a nursing agency nursing a terminal patient with ca lung and brain mets for 12 hours a day - long day, Regards, Caraibrit x
  3. If I get onto the medical, I'll ask around..
  4. Hello there Silverdragon, Good to hear from you again. Right now, I've just got to try to take life a little less frenetic. Time to get to know my patients (medical's good for that...rehab even better, 'cos you see the patient on the wellbeing side, instead of the sick side, which is why I wanted to try Occupational therapy as well as nursing, just not sure of my currently burned out brain thro' 10 years continuous study and raising three kids..) I wouldn't mind the rural life at all, thought of NS, but I don't see many openings there for a 48-year old ex-lecturer -cum-legal adviser. Where might be warmer than NS? Caraibrit x
  5. Hiya Madwife2002 which department did your friends work in? Lots of changes as you can imagine, There's the A block (newer) and F block (older) - met great people so far. Car Parking is usually a fiver a day, security's been letting me through for six quid a week, less than a quid a day. The only downside is the travel - 83miles round trip! Preston to Manchester! I really want to start the process, Silverdragon has been absolutely ace explaining the process. Will go to the Canada Expo taking place in Leeds in May. Got a email invite to apply to Newfoundland & Labrador, but am looking for somewhere that has more warmer months than winter months. Any suggestions? I'm game at the minute.. Caraibrit x
  6. Madwife, I know I have to think about emigrating soon, otherwise I am going to miss the boat completely. I have two teenage children 15 and 16. I work as an agency nurse in Wythemshawe in South Manchester. Been with them since November 2008. I haven't been through preceptorship because I left my job in critical care before I could complete it, but qualified in 2007. My experience so far has been bitty, with most of my time being in acute medicine. I have an interview to take an MSc in Occupational Therapy at Cumbria this Autumn (90 miles away from Manchester) for 18months. Is it worth staying to do this and then perhaps applying? Rather than take the NClex or CRNE, apply as an OT. I'll be 50 by then and my children 18 and 16. I can't bear the thought of living out the rest of my days here in England. It's so depressing. Caraibrit x
  7. Hi Cama, do tell! What was your strategy and which online courses are you referring to? Caraibrit
  8. Hi, I've got two interviews coming up. I'm not nervous any more, I've been on sooo many! I think I'm falling down on the basic nursing care. So, I'm going to take your tips Ayla2004 and I'll tell you what happens. Regards, Caraibrit x
  9. Hi All, I have just started as a Critical Care Nurse in ICU as my first job. I've held out for it and now I have it. My first day felt overwhelming because it seemed as if I was going into an exam situation yet again in six weeks' time but this time I didn't know my assessors, their preferences or dislikes. I was told I have 33 machines that are placed around the bedside which I need to be competent on by the time my appraisal come around next year. Although I have achieved quite a bit academically, I felt inadequate again. But the educators were encouraging and kept reassuring me that I would be supported throughout my probation period. I felt less nervous on my second day. My mentor, a nurse of two years qualification and half my age, said she was happy with my progress this week. So, although it's early days yet, I'm looking forward to improving my practice in this speciality area. Caraibrit:nurse:
  10. I have just qualified with a BSc in Pre-Registration Nursing. I have recently been offered a post in Neuro Critical Care, pending references and checks. I quickly found after being oriented into the muted, quiet environment that it was where I wanted to be. I'm grateful I've been given the opportunity to develop my professional practice in this area. Happy New Year everyone! Caraibrit
  11. Hi RGN1, Thanks for your input. I suspected as much. The Allnurses website is a great way to communicate and to pass on appropriate information. The grass always seems greener - but it still needs mowing! Will watch my email space. Kind regards Caraibrit
  12. Hi Has anyone any contact information on hospitals who direct hire in Orlando Florida? Just completed my BSc intending to work this year and then apply Thanks, Caraibrit
  13. Hi Silverdragon102, Could you tell me what the present situation is with the Retrogression problem in the US to date in 2007? Regards, Caraibrit
  14. Hello Letina, I'm also interested in finding out which hospitals in Florida to apply to directly. I've just finished my BSc and would like to research the feasibility of working in Florida. I'm aware that many obstacles exist in the process. But, I'd be grateful if you would pm me with the details? Many thanks, Regards Caraibrit
  15. Hi, Bearing in mind the current limited market for visas. How do you go about applying for work in the US as a newly qualified? Do you need 1-2 years experience for starters? How much money will I need upfront? Caraibrit
