I say nice casual. Your work environment is scrubs. Leave the suit and tie to the surgeons (you can't compete with their wardrobe anyway) and impress them with your enthusiasm. You're going to be a team player, not a sales rep.

Depends on who's interviewing. Usually, the theater UM is a tad more laid back than the rest of the brass, but rather err on the side of caution. Smart, businesslike, well-groomed. Wear something you feel good and confident in.

Respectfully, I disagree. Dress for the job you're interviewing for. Suit and tie is overkill for a staff nurse.

Yes, I agree; a woman can wear a suit and look business-like. A man in suit and tie can come across as overly formal.

Depending on what looks good on you, a light-colored semi-formal trouser with a black sports jacket or blazer. You can wear a tie, but a casual one, not something that would look at home if you were the funeral director during a funeral. Alternatively, depending on the weather, you can wear a knitted sweater over the shirt, one that complements the color of the pants. Get the picture?

As a former hiring manager, respectfully, that is wrong. If that was the case, then all nursing interviewees should simply wear scrubs. That's the dress code for the job you want.

There is no such thing as too formal. As a candidate, it is your job to impress me as the hiring manger. As much as people do not want to hear it, that means the whole package, and not just skills and abilities. Poise, polish, grooming, how you project yourself, clothing, appearance, how you speak as well as how you are able to express your thoughts, are all taken into account. There may be 8 other people interviewing for the position with the same or similar skills and experience you have and you need to take every opportunity to stand apart.

Being well groomed and in a nice suit says to me that really do want this job and are making every effort to show it. You care about the interview enough to put forth your absolute best (and while not always true) one hopes and would like to believe that the same drive and dedication would be seen in everything that you do. Besides, if I have two interviewees who are in suits and 5 that are not, you can bet that at the very least, the 2 in suits will stand out in my mind when I am going back over and reviewing the results of the interview (the reverse is also true, if I have 5 people in suits and 1 who did not wear one, guess who's going to stand out in my mind). That alone should be worth it for you.
